Curiosities
year ago

We may think that everyday things are boring and can’t surprise us anymore. But that’s not completely true, as some of the things we see on a daily basis have the most fascinating secrets or just simply unknown facts lying behind them.

1. The black dots on your french fries

We’ve all encountered those black dots on our French fries at least once in our lives. They might look really gross, but, in fact, there is nothing harmful about them. They are just pockets of sugar caused by the cold when keeping them in the refrigerator. When your fries are being cooked, thanks to the heat, these sugar pockets turn black because the outside of our snack cooks faster than the inside, and they burn.

2. Coal in peanut butter

We have seen many times that coal in peanut butter can be turned into diamonds. It’s actually possible to turn a piece of coal into a bright expensive diamond, but it’s not as easy to do, despite how simple people on the Internet make it seem. In order to actually turn the goal into a precious stone, you need special equipment that can generate a huge amount of pressure. But even with this, the process takes weeks to produce just a small diamond of 3 millimeters in diameter.

3. The mystery of rainbow corn

This rainbow corn is actually called glass gem corn. This type of corn has such an unbelievable combination of colors that it’s quite hard to believe unless you see it with your own eyes.

The results of this plant are not synthetic, however, it requires human action in collaboration with nature. They are open-pollinated by the wind. It isn’t grown for eating off the cob, but rather, for making very attractive colorful popcorn or cornflour.

4. Humans are the only living beings that blush.

Not only are we the only ones that blush, but humans are also the only living beings that experience embarrassment. In order to feel embarrassed, we need to understand other people’s opinions, which is a very complex emotion.

5. Black sapote tastes just like chocolate pudding.

It might be hard to believe, but yes, this fruit called black sapote actually tastes like real chocolate pudding.

6. Dogs aren’t actually colorblind.

We might have heard myths before that dogs are colorblind, but, in fact, they can actually see colors. They just have a problem with seeing a few shades, like reds, oranges, and greens, but they can see blues, yellows, and violets very well.

7. The Eiffel Tower can grow up to 15 centimeters.

In the high temperatures of summer, thanks to thermal expansion, the iron heats up and starts to expand. That’s why the Eiffel Tower can grow up to 15 centimeters.

8. Human teeth cannot heal themselves.

Human teeth are the only part of the body that cannot heal themselves, as they are coated in enamel, which is not a living tissue.

9. Snowfall in the Sahara Desert is an unusual phenomenon.

Seeing snow on the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert is quite a rare phenomenon to encounter, however, it happens. In order for snow to appear anywhere, we need 2 properties: cold temperatures and moist air. Even though the Sahara is mainly known for its very high temperatures, there are also very very low temperatures, as low as 7°F (-14°C).

Thanks to the bare land surface and cloudless skies at night, snow easily forms during winter air circulation, and moist air is drawn toward the northern Sahara from the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans.

10. Ketchup was once sold as medicine.

Back in the 1830s, ketchup was used as medicine, as it was prescribed to people who suffered from indigestion or diarrhea.

11. Avocados are not vegetables.

The avocado is a fruit, not a vegetable. In fact, it’s part of the single-seeded berry family, like peaches, cherries, and many other one-seeded fruits we’re familiar with.

12. Keys weren’t always pocket-sized.

Back in the day, door keys used to be much bigger than the ones we use now. Because different types of architecture used different-sized doors, a bigger door required much bigger keys.
