9 Movie Facts That Can Surprise the Most Hardcore Fans

It’s always great to discover what pure magic hides behind the scenes. And really, some actors may have an outstanding contribution to the whole movie itself. Some may change the plot entirely with mere improvisation. In other cases, directors themselves show us some extra talents they have in a shot or 2.

We at Bright Side have found some hilarious facts that allow us to look behind the screen and see what it takes to make a great movie.

1. Michael Jackson wanted to buy Marvel so he could act in Spider-Man.

Michael Jackson was really desperate to act in Spider-Man. He was genuinely interested in buying Marvel for that very reason. However, owning the company would never give him the part. To achieve that, he would also have to be the director. Anyway, he was unable to secure the rights to Marvel and we all saw the famous superhero played by Tobey Maguire.

2. A strict no-blinking rule in the Terminator

Arnold Schwarzenegger took on a strict no-blinking rule while shooting the first Terminator film. He thought that machines would never blink. However, not blinking was a very difficult thing to do. “In the first movie, we made mistakes where I did blink,” said the actor. “And then when we got to the second movie, I said to Jim [Cameron], ‘There’s no room for mistakes. There will be no blinking, ever.’” It was the right thing to do. Actually, the fact that he looks like a walking brick wall made the movie quite terrifying.

3. Jim Carrey paid tribute to his mother in The Mask.

The Mask became one of Jim Carrey’s most iconic performances. But not many fans know that the bright yellow suit was made by costume designers at the request of the actor himself. In fact, when Carrey started in stand-up at age 16, he had support from both of his parents. His mother, in particular, fashioned a yellow polyester suit with tails, but the show he wore it in bombed. However, Carrey was grateful for the opportunity and later paid tribute to his mother for all the support he got chasing his dreams.

4. The Godfather’s cat almost ruined the scene.

Francis Ford Coppola initially didn’t plan to shoot Don Corleone with a cat. “I saw the cat running around the studio and I took it and put it in his hands without a word,” said the director. Marlon Brando didn’t mind. Apparently, he loved animals, so the cat became a part of the scene, which almost ruined it! Its purring was so loud that the sound crew couldn’t understand a word of Brando’s dialogue. They even wanted to use subtitles. You can still hear this lovely purring on the original soundtrack.

5. Kate Winslet’s nude portrait in Titanic was actually made by James Cameron himself.

Despite his many talents, Leonardo DiCaprio was not the one who drew the nude Kate Winslet sketch in the movie. Director James Cameron was the actual artist who did it. The portrait haunted the actress ever since. Even at the Los Angeles premiere of Divergent, one fan handed Winslet a copy of the nude portrait and asked her to sign it. The original portrait was sold at auction in 2011 for $16,000.

6. Michelle Rodriguez didn’t have her license before shooting The Fast and the Furious.

Michelle Rodriguez didn’t have her license prior to the production of the first film. So she had to learn how to do it on set and officially get her license for The Fast and the Furious. The actress was 22 when she began filming the series.

7. 80% of Thor: Ragnarok was improvised.

The director of Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi, said that 80% of the film was improvisation. “My style of working is I’ll often be behind the camera or right next to the camera yelling words at people, like, ’Say this, say this! Say it this way!’ I’ll straight-up give Anthony Hopkins a line reading. I don’t care,” said Waititi. Perhaps he wanted to create an atmosphere where people could feel free to pitch any ideas as if they were among old friends. And the results were magnificent.

8. Emily Blunt saved Meryl Streep while filming Into the Woods.

During one Into the Woods rehearsal, Emily Blunt saved Meryl Streep from falling down on set. “Meryl Streep’s foot got caught in her cape, and we just started to watch her slowly topple head-first toward the concrete floor,” said Blunt on The Late Show. The actress, who was pregnant at the time, sprung without any hesitation and caught Streep.

9. Daniel Radcliffe wore out dozens of wands and glasses through all the Harry Potter movies.

Daniel Radcliffe wore out 60-70 wands during the making of all the Harry Potter films all on his own. Actually, there are no 2 wands in any movie that are alike, as well as any glasses. He’s been through 160 pairs of them over the course of filming. So they’ve all changed even more often than we could ever think.
