I hope your dad is doing better! Have you ever had a coworker or boss show up for you when life got tough?
10 Bosses and Coworkers Who Showed That Leadership Starts With Patience and Compassion

A good boss doesn’t always have the right answer, and a supportive coworker doesn’t need a fancy job title to make someone’s day easier. Sometimes, leadership means listening before judging, while compassion and kindness show up in the smallest workplace moments. These 10 workplace moments feature managers going out of their way for their team, colleagues making room for personal struggles, and people finding a better work-life balance because someone finally paid attention.
- My father was admitted to the hospital, and I took three days off from my new job with a new manager at an architecture firm. When I returned, I had 47 unread emails/texts. I was honestly too stressed to open them.
But to my surprise, they were not extra work emails or anything work-related at all. The news of my father spread at the office, and so many of my coworkers and seniors personally contacted me. Some to wish him well, others to tell me not to worry and that they’ve got my back at the office.
I had heard plenty of corporate talk about work-life balance before, but this was the first time anyone had made it easier for me to manage one. It was probably the first time I felt genuine kindness and compassion at work.
I'm probably lucky, in my working life (now retired), I've always had colleagues and bosses like that (one MD offered to lend me his Daimler for the weekend without being asked).
- I was pretty broke at the time so I lied about my cat on my apartment application to avoid paying a higher deposit and pet rent. The property manager notified us they planned to do walk-throughs of the units at the complex so my manager let me put my cat in her carrier and take her to work with me at the office until the walkthrough was over so they wouldn’t find out I had lied about her. She was a real one for that.
Awesome Happy that you love your Kitty that much ❤️
My boss and I had an ugly sweater competition.
- I had a coworker about ten years ago. We became work friends but he was moving to another state. So on his last day, he brought and gave me an iPod nano (back when they were fairly new) completely filled with different music that we had talked about or listened to together.
No one had ever done something that thoughtful for me before. I could have cried. If you’re out there, Gabe, that’s something that I will always remember.
- I spent weeks working day and night to close a huge $36,400 deal for my company. When the year-end bonuses arrived, mine was a $50 Amazon gift card.
I marched into my boss’s office and demanded an explanation. He barely even looked up from his computer and said, “Everyone gets what they deserve. Be patient.” I was so hurt and disappointed at the leadership. I thought about quitting the job.
The next morning, my desk was a complete mess. Papers were scattered everywhere, and someone even took my nameplate off. I genuinely thought I was getting fired. Then my boss walked over and told me to follow him.
We got into a cabin and there was my nameplate on the desk! He said, “Like I said, everyone will get what they deserve. Congratulations on your promotion!” Happiest day of my life! I got a raise and a new job title.
Awesome story, CONGRATULATIONS 🎊 YOU DESERVED IT
My coworker made portraits of both my dogs
- I worked at a care home in Leeds with a porter named Martin. He was maybe 58 and seemed to work every other weekend.
When we got our new manager, she actually looked through the rota instead of copying the previous month’s schedule. She arranged a shift swap so Martin could have one full weekend off each month.
The following week, he brought a tin of butterscotch biscuits for everyone. He told us he and his wife planned their first outing in months. His positive experience made the rest of us feel comfortable asking for a fairer work-life balance too.
- Was training to be a Legal Executive aged 17 and was working for posh partnership. One of the partners called me in and said that my clothes were not suitable for the office. I told him I would struggle to pay for the correct attire as most of my pay went to my mum but I would do my best.
He wrote a note to his tailor to measure me up head to toe with 2 suits, 2 shirts, 2 ties, 5 pairs of socks and 2 pair of shoes. I was too proud to accept his help and bought a suit etc on credit. I’ve never forgotten the kindness to this day.
I turned 40 yesterday — my PhD student, wife and boss secretly conspired to print and mount one of my photos at work as a birthday surprise.
- I was 24 and still learning the closing routine at a pharmacy in Columbus, Ohio. Our card reader stopped working five minutes before closing. I couldn’t get the till to balance, and I was so sure I would be blamed for the missing amount.
My coworker Luis had a bus to catch, but he stayed till we checked all the receipts and documented the error for the morning pharmacist. He even showed me where the troubleshooting sheet was kept.
The next week, when he needed to leave early for his daughter’s school concert, I covered the end of his shift.
