13 Examples of Neighbors, Passengers, and Classmates Helping Families Through Hard Times

According to research published by the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, choosing everyday kindness directly boosts personal well-being and builds lasting human connections. Real-life compassion does not always look like a grand gesture; often, genuine empathy manifests in awkward, quiet moments where someone simply decides to pay real attention to a stranger, and these stories are all about that.
1.
- My teenage son came home at midnight with scratches on his hands and a black eye. “You are just like your mother. Always causing problems,” I yelled. He started crying and reached into his pocket. I went white. It was my wife’s wedding ring. She had lost it a few months before she passed away, and we had searched everywhere for it. I asked him what happened, and he said he had been looking for it in the basement because he remembered his mom taking it off down there while they were painting. He had moved a bunch of old boxes and scratched up his hands, then hit his eye on a shelf. He finally found the ring underneath an old cabinet. He could have just come upstairs and given it to me, but he had cleaned it first because it was covered in dirt. I looked at him and realized he had spent hours looking for something he knew I still missed.
2.
- I was riding a late night subway train when a guy in a heavy coat kept staring at a young woman sleeping across from him. Every time the train jolted, he reached into his jacket like he was checking for something, then looked back at her. Everyone in the car was visibly uncomfortable, including me. When her stop arrived and she got up, he suddenly moved forward toward her seat. I actually stood up to intervene, assuming the worst. Instead, he scooped up her wallet (which had slipped between the seat cushions), handed it to her, and politely said, “You dropped this, stay safe out there.” He was just anxious about missing his own window to return it.
Maybe he checking his pocket to make sure he had not dropped his wallet. I have anxiety and catch myself checking things over and over. Maybe he does too. Anyway he did the right thing kudos to him
3. “Thanks to some awesome guys, my disabled son achieved his dream of driving a supercar (actually four)!”
4.
- I got an urgent call from my son’s high school principal asking me to come in immediately. A teacher had overheard my teenager whispering in the hallway about a secret plan he was setting up for his classmates, and the school assumed the absolute worst. When I arrived, the principal and a guidance counselor were already talking to him, but he just sat there with his head down, refusing to say a word. Panic completely took over me, and I started yelling at him, demanding to know what he was hiding. He suddenly broke down in tears, unzipped his backpack, and pulled out a worn notebook. It turned out he had been carefully tracking which of his friends could not afford school lunch or were going through hard times financially. He was planning a weekly meal prep schedule to quietly bring extra food from home for them so they would not go hungry. Seeing him cry while holding that notebook made my heart drop. I was ready to condemn my own kid, while he was just trying to protect his friends.
It's ok to make problem sometimes I should know that u not one who createdp problem but one person has created
5.
- I was shopping at a grocery store and accidentally dropped my bus transfer on the floor. An employee, who still works there, picked it up and gave it back to me. What she did not know was that after I had purchased my groceries, I had no money left to pay for the bus to get home, so I really needed that transfer.
How does daily compassion and empathy bring happiness into your life?
Feel good factor, buzz, quiet satisfaction of being useful?
6.
- I was in the bathroom of a dingy restaurant crying because my parents had been yelling at me all day. I was convinced that the world was empty of kindness and that no one would ever love me. A woman saw me crying, came to me, hugged me, and told a crying teenager that everything was going to be okay. I believed her because she was kind enough to change my day, she was kind enough to look at me and help me, and that still makes me cry. It meant something to me, and she will never know the impact she had.
7.
- Thirty years ago my house burned down. The lady down the street, whose own house needed major repairs, was raising her granddaughter and caring for her son with severe memory loss, gave my family 60 dollars. It was beyond kind because she needed the money too.
8. “Someone left these two Easter baskets full of candy on our doorstep.”

9.
- My doctor’s office charges a cancellation fee if you do not give them a 24-hour notice for a missed appointment. I did not realize it until I had accumulated about $80 in fees. I showed up for an appointment, and the receptionist had to ask her office manager if I could be seen without paying the balance, in addition to the copay for that day’s visit. I understand why they have the policy in place, but it was really embarrassing and made me feel terrible. The manager gave the OK, and after my appointment, the receptionist told me the person behind me in line had paid $40 on my account. I am probably finding a different office, so I may not have a chance to thank her in person, but I was blown away nonetheless. I would recognize her if I saw her, but of course, they cannot give out someone’s name.
10.
- I was having a really awful day at work. I was working in tech and had been given extra work since a colleague had quit, without a raise or promotion (promised but not in writing, meaning it was never coming), and I was just in a horrible headspace. I had mentioned online having a terrible day to my friends on Discord (real-life friends, not just online friends). Less than an hour later, I had a knock on my door and was delivered a bottle in a paper bag with the words “terrible day fixer.” I still have that paper bag. That bottle and message really did fix the terrible day. It also got me searching for a new job that same week, and I had something far better less than a month later.
11. “Today, three sisters left over 100 positive notes on the Manette Bridge in Bremerton, Washington.”
12.
- When I was a kid, a close family friend passed away unexpectedly. He was basically a family member and I loved him very much. I was extremely emotional at his wake. I remember seeing a man there. I did not know him, but there was something kind about him. Something came over me before we left. I ran up to this stranger, hugged him, and cried. He did not push me off or rush me and seemed to understand it was something I needed in that moment. He consoled me. I still think about him from time to time.
13.
- When my dad passed away, the entire town came together to get the house ready for the wake without ever being asked. Neighbors came and deep cleaned the entire house, washed windows, and people came and washed my dad’s jeep and scooters to display them outside. Others brought food, and the local gardening center came and planted some new flowers. I remember looking outside and seeing three people, all of whom did not know each other, power washing our driveway. I will never forget how they took so much stress off our shoulders and just let us grieve without the worry of getting the place in order.
