It Took John Stamos Several Romances and a Failed Marriage to Find True Love
Although Full House and Grandfathered star John Stamos had always wanted to become a dad, he only found the perfect woman in his fifties. His lifelong wish of having a child was finally granted a bit later than he had expected. Stamos is now 59 years old and a proud dad to his son, Billy.
It took John Stamos several romances and a failed marriage to find true love.
Decades before falling in love with Caitlin McHugh, John Stamos had a 10-year-long relationship with actress and model Rebecca Romijn. After being married for 6 years, however, the couple called it quits. Stamos also had less serious relationships with other actresses, like with his Full House co-star, Lori Loughlin.
He met his future wife back in 2011, but they only started dating years later.
Stamos and McHugh met in 2011 in a very un-romantic setting. They were both starring in an episode of Law & Order: SVU, but McHugh was dating someone else at the time. Stamos’ character was also a less than agreeable man, while McHugh was portraying one of the women he was trying to fool.
Thankfully, life gave a second chance to the future couple, and they crossed paths again in 2015, this time hitting it off instantly. Despite McHugh being 23 years Stamos’ junior, the 2 found that they had many things in common, like a deep love for Disneyland, and the relationship got serious pretty quickly. “It took time for me to really be the best person I could be,” John Stamos explained in an interview about why he’s glad that he found the love of his life at a later age.
After 2 years of dating, they had a fairy-tale-like proposal.
After only a few years of dating, Stamos decided to pop the big question to his girlfriend. “I said I’d better have a ring on her finger because it’s the right thing to do. So I called her parents to ask, and it was like, ‘You’d better!’” the actor explained. So he decided to arrange a Disney-themed proposal, complete with a short video featuring romantic scenes from their favorite movies.
“I kissed the boy and said...yes! That’s what you do when the sweetest, most romantic Prince Charming treats you like a princess and asks you to be his,” McHugh gushed in an Instagram post sharing the happy news. The couple got married a few months later in a private ceremony.
Stamos had always wanted to become a dad, and his son didn’t leave him waiting much longer.
But before they could tie the knot, life had another surprise for the happy couple. Stamos’ lifelong wish was about to be fulfilled and he was going to be a dad. “That’s always been my plan. It’s just taken me a lot longer than I anticipated. It would be a tragedy if I didn’t have children and I finally found the right woman — the perfect woman,” the actor said in an earlier interview.
Stamos and McHugh’s son was born on the 10th of April, 2018. He was named after the actor’s late father, Billy Stamos. “I will certainly fall short of the father my pop was, but I’m going to give it my all!” John wrote.
Being an older dad has many perks, according to the Full House star.
“I’m very grateful that I’m an older father. I couldn’t have handled it earlier,” said Stamos. Little Billy was born when Stamos was already 54 years old, but the actor thinks that having kids later in life has many advantages. “I’ve wanted kids my whole life. I figured, ‘I can’t wait to be a father, I’ve been a TV father,’ but it’s a whole different ballgame. It’s the greatest blessing of my life. I couldn’t imagine my life without him, but it is challenging to do it right,” he added.
