What’s So Special About Grimes — the Indie Pop-Singer Elon Musk Chose Over Any Top-Model
In May of 2020, the world learned the news that the co-owner and CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk, and his girlfriend Grimes had a son. And now there’s even more news: pop-star Grimes is selling a part of her soul. It is clear that Grimes is a unique girl, if for no other reason than because the most famous engineer and billionaire in the world fell in love with her.
We at Bright Side are happy that baby X Æ A-12-Xii was born (this is the name the extravagant couple gave to their son) and we want you to find out more about this indie pop-star and special girl that Elon chose over any top-model in the world.

Claire Elise Boucher is the real name of the singer. She was born in 1988 in Canada, her mother is a lawyer, and her father is a banker. She has French, Italian, Ukrainian and Métis ancestry.
-
She has an amazing imagination, and she loves creating entire universes in her imagination. This is all thanks to her father who read her Dune by Herbert and The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien.
-
In 2006, Claire moved to Montreal and entered McGill University where she also studies the Russian language, but then decides to stop her education to pursue a career in music.
-
At the age of 20, when she is already seriously interested in music, Claire chooses the stage name Grimes. Despite the complex nature of her music, the singer doesn’t have a musical education.
-
Grimes’ music is pretty strange, it’s as if it’s from a different world. The Wall Street Journal gave this very clear description, “it’s the kind of music you imagine a group of vampires would listen to if this group of vampires also happened to be on a cheerleading squad.” Her unique style is easy to explain if you think about the fact that it was shaped by completely different artists and groups. She loves David Bowie, Queen, Mariah Carey, Marilyn Manson, Michael Jackson, and she also adores K-pop and medieval music.
-
In 2010, the singer released her first album, Geidi Primes, then she released Halfaxa but her songs didn’t become very popular right away. Despite that, Grimes remained hopeful.
-
In 2012, she releases the album Visions that makes Grimes popular. The singer designed the cover herself and she added the words “I love you” in Russian and the epigraph includes words by Anna Akhmatova: “But I’m warning you that I’m living for the last time.”
- In 2015, Grimes announced her fifth album Art Angels and in 2016, she released the song Medieval Warfare that was on the soundtrack of the American action film Suicide Squad.
- The singer has a speech impediment — she lisps, but it doesn’t worry her much and fans actually love it. Grimes is very calm about it, and she says, “I can’t do anything about it, so let it be.”
-
Grimes has many tattoos and, of course, all of them mean something. She has an emblem of her favorite videogame, 8 is her favorite number, and on her fingers, she has the symbols from The Fifth Element. Right next to them, she has an alien head because she believes in aliens. Also, one of her many tattoos is a tribute to Christina Aguilera’s song “Beautiful.”
-
In May 2018, Grimes officially changed her name from Claire to C, because this is what her friends always call her and because she never really liked the name Claire, because it’s the symbol for the speed of light, because it sounds like a superhero name, because... because, why not?

The eccentric singer met Elon Musk on Twitter in 2018, and it was their sense of humor that connected them. In his tweet, Musk made a joke about Roko’s Basilisk and the baroque style. Roko’s Basilisk is a thought experiment where an evil artificial intelligence wants to punish everyone who knew about the possibility of it appearing but didn’t actually help make it. And Grimes responded by adding this character in her “Flesh Without Blood” video.
-
Grimes is convinced that Elon Musk is not only changing the world, but actually saving it: not only by giving up using fuel with Tesla, but by pushing the boundaries with SpaceX, and helping the world in Neuralink. The singer says, “There are a lot of problems in the world that we need to solve. The government does not truly have the capacity to solve them. My boyfriend is actually doing it, tangibly, visibly — like, you just can’t deny it.”
- In September 2019, the unfinished version of her album Miss Anthropocene was leaked online, with a finalized version of the album leaking a few months later, but she was focused on something different. She amazed her fans by telling them that she was pregnant and she uploaded a provocative photo of her belly with an embryo drawn on it. While she was still pregnant, Grimes was worried about the future of her baby, “I’m worried about having a kid, because I’m so worried that my kid will be as crazy as me.”
- Pregnancy was a challenge for Grimes, she says, “Pregnancy for a woman is a great sacrifice. I sacrificed my freedom and my body. It’s a crazy thing, as if you’re giving up part of your power. I’d never sacrificed anything before. I guess it happened because I really love my boyfriend.”
- The singer explained her wish to have children — she said she cared about the future of the planet, “With nuclear war, artificial intelligence, and climate change looming... we’ve become so technologically advanced that we might actually end our own civilization. Having a kid makes me want to work harder to make the world better.”
- On May 4, Grimes and Elon Musk had a baby. It was the first baby for her and the sixth for Elon.
-
The baby was named X Æ A-12. According to Grimes’ official Twitter account, this is how they came up with the name. X is an unknown variable, Æ is elvish for Ai — which means love in Japanese, and there was a mistake with A-12. The young mom thought it was the name of a plane that didn’t have any weapons, and that was just fast. But Elon Musk noticed that the plane she was talking about was actually called SR-71. And letter A is also a reference to Grimes’s favorite song Archangel. The baby’s name is pronounced as X-Ash-A-12.
-
A bit later, the parents had to change the number 12 to Xii, because according to the laws of California, you can only use the letters of the English alphabet, apostrophes, and dashes in names.
- Right after the birth of her child, the singer decided to sell her drawings, photos, and... a part of her soul. So, there is an actual legal paper proving that one can own a part of the singer’s soul.
- Grimes is planning to save the planet, create art, and write a book, “Oh, I’ll just wait until I’m old and out of musical ideas, and then I’ll sit down and write a novel.”
