20+ Movie Clichés That Make Us Wanna Go, “Oh, Come On!”

There are so many films now that it’s hard to come up with something new, so movie creators often use the same tricks. They end up becoming clichés that annoy viewers. For example, a girl walking in a winter forest wearing a light coat. Or a woman in labor screaming as if she’s giving birth to an alien.

We at Bright Side really love movies, but honestly speaking, we’re sometimes ready to criticize the creators. Today — it’s for the clichés we’re tired of.

  • If the main character is fighting evil, his enemies will probably try to get to him through his girlfriend. So, most protagonists are ready to break up with the girl to protect her, for example, Edward Cullen in Twilight.
  • If someone is attacked and hiding behind a sofa, not a single bullet will get through. That’s some quality furniture!
  • The most attractive and mean girl in school wears the most girly clothes, with mini-skirts and other revealing outfits. And good girls dress to hide their beautiful bodies under baggy jeans. For example, Cady and Regina in Mean Girls.
  • If someone starts throwing food in the school cafeteria, very soon, everyone is going to do it.
  • The main character can easily dress as a person of the opposite sex and nobody will notice. Even when it’s absolutely obvious, like in Some Like It Hot and She’s the Man.
  • In films, piranhas are terrible monsters that eating people. But in fact, they don’t usually attack people or eat carrion.
  • In real life, it’s hard to have a normal conversation in a nightclub, but in movies, characters hear each other really well.
  • An unattractive girl, that the most attractive guy at school is attracted to, looks better than the most attractive girl. Even Hollywood is trying to convince us that Sandra Bullock is not pretty.
  • If the main character is wanted by the police, they will walk into a café at exactly the same moment when their photo will be shown on TV saying that they’re “wanted.”
  • In movies, doctors are universal. They can do tests, MRIs, and all sorts of other things. It seems that movie creators don’t even know that nurses and other specialists exist.
  • In movies, when someone’s heart stops, they use a defibrillator to start it again. But this is not realistic. It’s used to restore a normal heartbeat, when the heart is beating, but in the wrong way.
  • In movies, labor starts with the future mother screaming, grabbing her belly, and saying, “I think it’s time.” And then she is going to scream, clench her fists, and do all sorts of weird stuff. It’s possible, but in most cases, real labor doesn’t look anything like this.
  • If the main character is running away from someone and jumps into a car, it won’t start until the bad guys are really close.
  • If the main character is following someone, they will most likely bump into a truck or a cargo train.
  • When everyone is happy in a movie, something awful is going to happen. Like, in Titanic.
  • The main character often doesn’t tell others about their plans and ends up in trouble. They could have just told someone, and everything would’ve gone smoothly.
  • The worst guy always ends up being a brave and smart person.
  • If someone has to babysit, the kids will definitely be monsters.
  • Giant alien ships are only noticed when the shadows they make cover the entire city.
  • Almost all aliens speak English. And if an alien is speaking its own language, it’s very likely that they understand English too.
  • The Moon is always full. There are no other phases.
  • Even when it’s freezing, characters wear light clothes and feel totally fine.
  • A calm, sensible, and strong man always gets someone who has a bad sense of humor, and talks non-stop as a partner. But at the end of the film, the latter saves his life.
  • The meanest girl at school has 2 friends that are always with her and are not very smart. And deep down, one of them doesn’t really want to be there. Mean Girls is a good example.

What movie clichés do you find annoying?

Nobody ever sneezes or coughs or burps or farts while saying their lines like in real life except to introduce the slob character. And then the slob character acts more normally after his intro scenes.
