Statistics state that over the last couple of years, social media usage among teens and tweens has increased by 17%. This is a concerning trend considering how influential and harmful the Internet seems to be these days. Any parent would be worried about their children in the digital era, and celebrities are no exception. These famous parents shield their kiddos from social media as much as they can, and for good reason.

Victoria Beckham

Posh Spice is no stranger to how cruel people can be on social media. Having experienced mean comments and watchful eyes over her every move, she’s shared her concerns over her daughter, Harper, facing the same treatment: “Harper isn’t on social media... seeing how cruel people can be, yes it really does [concern me]. She’s at that age where her body is going to start changing, but it’s about making sure that we communicate a lot as a family and she surrounds herself with nice friends.”

The movie star knows it’s a bit too drastic to fully shield his children from social media, but he’s taking all the precautions he can to make sure they’re safe. Hugh Jackman said, “They are on social media but I tell them they can only follow people they know, and only people we know can follow them.”
Jackman also added that he keeps track of his kids’ online activity. “I also tell them I am going to look at their phones. I do it randomly. They are young and they will make mistakes. But I don’t want them to make ones they are going to live with for years.”

Julia Roberts

The Pretty Woman star got especially concerned about her children being exposed to things on social media after starring in the movie, Ben Is Back, which follows the relationship between a mother and her troubled teenage son. Since then, Roberts became very strict about her kids’ whereabouts online, explaining, “I try to keep them off social media because I don’t really understand what they need that for right now.”

Mayim Bialik

The Big Bang Theory star is very open about her unique parenting style. Her kids are homeschooled, they don’t receive expensive presents, and she doesn’t insist on them using words like “please” and “thank you.” In addition, Bialik believes that children can’t benefit from the use of technology and doesn’t give them smartphones.

I don’t think a 12-year-old needs a phone unless they are physically away from me, and in the city I live in, there is nowhere I would leave my child without an adult present,” she said. “It’s not healthy for small people to be constantly monitoring likes, comments, and other people’s lives the way social media allows us to... I don’t need to ’trust’ them, I need to protect them. The Internet is a wonderful place but it’s also a potentially very disturbing, scary place with images and videos of things that can absolutely harm them and make them very upset.”

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman explains her negative stance on social media by the fact that she herself isn’t tech-savvy enough to keep an eye on her children’s online whereabouts. She shared, “I’m not very techy myself, so it’s very hard for me to monitor it and stay on it, and I won’t let them be on Instagram. I have a 12-year-old right now who’s chomping at the bit wanting to get into all that and I’m like, ’No, no.’”

Angelina Jolie

A few years ago, some people online created fake Instagram accounts for Angelina Jolie’s children. This incident forced the actress to confirm that her kids have no public social media profiles. She also admitted that it’s difficult for her to keep track of what her children might be doing online, explaining, “There are certain realities to teenagers, and also, our generation doesn’t understand half of what they are doing with their tech so they can get around us pretty easy.” Considering that, it’s easier for her to make sure her kids stay offline as much as possible.

Heidi Klum

The famous supermodel considers herself a strict parent, as she limits her children’s social media presence and makes sure to always hide their faces when posting anything family-related on her Instagram. She revealed, “My oldest daughter [Leni] is 13 and she wants to post her face and I always say, ‘No, you’re not allowed to.’ Whenever she’s in it, it has to be from the back or [hiding her face]. It’s different when we do it — I feel like we’re grown-ups — but I want to try and keep them children for as long as possible.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star got candid about keeping her 13-year-old and her 10-year-old off social media completely. Sarah Michelle Gellar admits that her and her husband’s parenting style is stricter than most, but they consider it necessary, saying, “Our kids don’t have social media. They’re allowed to look sometimes when it’s our phones. Sometimes, our kids will be like, ’You guys are the strictest household!’”

The actress then proceeded to compare children being on social media to getting their face tattooed because of the mistakes they can make online, saying, “Because at that age, there’s nothing better than Paw Patrol. And now you’re 10 and [13], and you still have these tattoos on your face and it’s not even who you are anymore.”

What are your thoughts on young kids being exposed to social media? What rules did you set for your children?

The adoption of Maddox from a Cambodian orphanage marked a significant turning point in Angelina Jolie’s life. The connection she felt with Maddox was immediate and profound, leading her to become a dedicated mother and advocate for children’s rights.
