10 Neighbors Whose Landscaping Examples Show Why Backyard Gardening and Growing Your Own Food Bring Happiness to the Whole Community

Right now, with the last tomatoes coming off the vines and the first leaves hitting the lawn, a lot of backyard gardens are turning into front-porch gifts. Growing your own food means too much zucchini, spare seedlings and wildflower seeds, and the easiest way to use them is to hand them over the fence. We present our beloved readers with these 10 stories that show how landscaping and home gardening bring kindness, generosity and happiness to a whole community and homes in October 2026.
My real estate agent showed me a house 20% under market. I asked, “Why so cheap?” She said, “The owner left furniture, clothes, hot dinner on the table and vanished. Police found nothing.” I bought it anyway because why shouldn’t I? At 3 a.m., I heard footsteps downstairs. Dirty, wet footprints led me straight to my kitchen. There was an old guy in pajamas and one slipper, sitting at the head of the table like he was waiting on dinner. I almost called 911. Then he said, “Sorry, sorry, that’s my chair,” and I could see how scared he was.
His name was Walter, he was 84, and he had a care home bracelet on his wrist. I gave him a towel and called the number on it. A night nurse showed up about 15 minutes later, out of breath, saying he’d slipped out again. The care home is two streets over.
Nobody vanished, the agent just had the story wrong. After his wife passed, his kids moved him in there and the house sat untouched, because nobody could face boxing it up. The “hot dinner” was from the day he left. A neighbor cleaned the rest out later. His daughter came by the next day to apologize, and I told her it was fine. I still changed the locks, but I leave the porch light on now. Last Sunday she brought him by for an hour. He wandered out back and stared at the grass like they owed him money. His wife grew vegetables there for around 40-46 years, and the beds are hidden under grass now. “Tomatoes go on the left,” he told me. “Right side gets too much shade.” I rented a tiller, and the neighbors showed up with compost and garlic. Now there’s a coffee pot going out back every Sunday, and Walter runs the whole thing from a lawn chair.
I would never have the courage to buy a house which sounds like haunted in the beginning hahaha
