Actor, filmmaker, husband, and father, George Clooney has graced the big screen for decades and has been in the public eye for just as long. We may think we know everything about the actor, but there are some facts that even surprised us.

1. He almost became an athlete.

He wanted to play baseball. Clooney said in an interview, “I could catch anything. I was a great outfielder in high school. But I couldn’t throw well. I wanted to play pro baseball. I thought that would be it.”

2. He writes a letter to his wife every day.

In an interview, Clooney spoke about how he and Amal write each other letters. He said, “Even in lockdown, I’ll write a letter and slip it on her desk, or she’ll write a letter and leave it under the pillow. I’m a big believer in letters.”

3. He has taken care of his pet pig for almost 20 years.

Clooney had a pot-bellied pig called Max for 18 years. He said, “He was as old a pig as the vets had ever seen. I was really surprised because he’s been a big part of my life.”

4. He gave 14 of his best friends $1 million dollars.

Clooney wanted to thank his friends who helped him over his career. He invited 14 of his friends to a dinner party and gave them each 1 million dollars. He said, “I’ve slept on their couches when I was broke. They loaned me money when I was broke. They helped me when I needed help over the years. And I’ve helped them over the years.”

5. Clooney was the first actor to be nominated for an Academy Award in 6 different categories.

When George Clooney was nominated for producing Argo with Ben Affleck he broke records. This was his sixth different category for which he had been nominated for an Oscar. He had been nominated for writing, directing, and acting.

6. He studied to be a journalist.

George Clooney’s father was a broadcast journalist in Cincinnati. Inspired by his father to pursue the same path he studied journalism at university. But dropped out because he didn’t want to be compared to his dad.

7. He’s an activist.

Clooney said, “My father’s one mantra was to always challenge anyone in power and always defend anyone without power, and if you do that in life, you win. I’d be embarrassed if my kids in 20 years look back at this moment in time and said ’you were okay with this and you didn’t stand up and say something?’”

8. He’s friends with the British royal family.

George and Amal attended Harry and Meghan’s wedding. He said, “We live not too far from one another and we have dinners and stuff and we’re friends with them for all the reasons that you’re friends with anybody, just really nice, fun, kind people.”
