Alabama Teen Ends Up Becoming an Unexpected Hero With Act of Simple Kindness to Stranger

One Alabama teen found himself having problems falling asleep one night. That, combined with work and school, would be a lot for most teens to handle. However, this young man decided to get a head start on the day. This would lead to a story of compassion, kindness, and kinship.

Encountering a confused stranger, the teen would especially learn that even a seemingly small act of kindness could make someone a hero.

Things started when Johnson Thompson flipped a lawn mower on a steep hillside, suffering a severe concussion. After enduring around a week of restless nights, he decided to start his day early by heading into his family’s workshop and start the day. At around 4:30 AM on June 30, he soon realized he was now in the right place and time to help someone.

Across the parking lot, a car slowly rolled to a stop. The driver, a 76-year-old woman, Fannie Garner, left the car and started wandering toward the business’s door. Tugging at the entrance, Thompson moved over to check out the situation. Filled with compassion, he asked Garner if he could help her.

Garner revealed that she was looking for an emergency room. Thompson was able to point her in the right direction. This act of kindness seemed simple, but proved to be serious when Garner learned hours later that she was suffering from a brain bleed.

Speaking with Today, Garner shared, “The last thing I remember was having a bad headache and lying across my bed. I don’t remember leaving the house. I don’t remember driving. I don’t remember stopping at lights. I don’t remember parking the car.”

Investigators later learned that Garner had driven around 15 to 30 miles from her home in Cherokee to Tuscumbia while facing a medical emergency. Comparing things to a miracle, she shared, “I don’t know how I got there.” At first, by his own admission, Thompson was a bit confused. But his kindness won out. As he shared, “I just knew I had to help.”

Garner declined calling for an ambulance. However, Thompson thought it best to call anyway. Knowing that the hospital was far off, he gave her a chair and waited with her for the paramedics.

Later, emergency physicians learned things were serious enough for Garner to be immediately transferred by helicopter to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. According to Garner’s loved ones, Thompson’s simple act of kinship towards a stranger ended up saving a life.

Touched by his compassion, Garner’s niece, Monique Stanley, took to Facebook in hopes of finding Thompson to thank him, not knowing his name. In a public share, she praised him for his “quick thinking, concern and willingness to act that made all the difference.” As she put it, his young wisdom recognized “that something was seriously wrong.”

Stanley continued, “What could have become a tragic situation instead became a remarkable example of how one person’s compassion can save another’s life. For someone not to remember anything and for there to be an angel in exactly the right place at the right time.”

Once the story spread across the community, Garner’s family soon uncovered the mysterious stranger. They got the chance to thank him in person. They also soon learned of a connection between the two: the same emergency physician who treated Garner also cared for Thompson after his lawn mower accident.

In other words, the story of compassion ended up going full circle. As the outlet noted, Thompson thanked the physician for his kindness and wisdom. As he shared, “I feel like He protected me when I was in my accident and then He used me to help someone else.”

As Monique shared in a follow-up post, Thompson’s quick thinking has not gone unnoticed. He was even awarded the Key to the City by the City of Tuscumbia. For his part, Thompson himself noted that he’s a bit overwhelmed by the attention.

Since what happened, Garner’s family has stayed close with Thompson’s. They will reportedly cheer him on when he graduates from high school next spring. Garner shared, “You can’t find too many like him. His parents raised him right.”

There are many takeaways from this story. Kinship and compassion can go a long way. More importantly, people can often find themselves receiving the kindness they showed to others. What are some similar stories of kindness being repaid that you are aware of? Please share with us in the comments.
