9 Celebrities Who’ve Opened Up About Hair Loss and Shown Many Women They’re Not Alone
Around 55% of women will experience hair loss at some point in their life, and if you’re familiar with this problem, you’re definitely not alone. Many women notice their hair is starting to thin for multiple reasons — diet, stress, postpartum body changes, and it can often affect your self-esteem. Though we’re used to seeing celebrities always looking their best, many of them have also gone through hair loss, and they shared their experience with us to show just how common it is.
We at Bright Side applaud these strong and confident celebs who decided to share their personal stories with the world to support women suffering from hair loss.
1. Jada Pinkett Smith
The Angel Has Fallen star first shared how stressed she was about losing her hair in 2018. “It was terrifying when it first started,” she said. “I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands. It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking in fear,” she said.
The actress made a decision to shave her head and has been sporting her buzz cut ever since.
2. Viola Davis
The award-winning actress revealed that she suffered from extreme hair loss at 28 years old. “I woke up one day, and it looked like I had a Mohawk. Big splash of bald on the top of my head,” she said.
After that episode, she wore wigs almost everywhere: “I wore a wig in the Jacuzzi. I had a wig I wore around the house. I had a wig that I wore when I worked out. I never showed my natural hair.” Davis finally embraced her natural hair at the 2012 Oscars and looked absolutely stunning.
3. Ricki Lake
The Hairspray star opened up about her struggle with hair loss in a powerful Instagram post.
“I have been suffering in silence off and on for almost 30 years. I have been struggling with hair loss for most of my adult life. It has been debilitating, embarrassing, painful, scary, depressing, lonely, all the things. I am not alone in this, and my goal is to help others while at the same time unshackle myself from this quiet hell I have been living in,” she wrote.
4. Tyra Banks
Like many people who’ve experienced hair loss, the top model started noticing thinning hair due to stress. She revealed that writing her book, Modelland, turned out to be much more stressful than she expected. “Honestly, chilling for me was eating a meal. How can I say this without tearing up? I got a little alopecia from the stress,” she shared.
5. Keira Knightley
The Oscar winner had to color her hair for years for different roles and eventually, it caused her strands to fall out. “I have dyed my hair virtually every color imaginable for different films. It got so bad that my hair literally began to fall out of my head! So for the past 5 years, I’ve used wigs,” she revealed.
6. Naomi Campbell
Just like Keira Knightley, Naomi Campbell had to dye her hair for movies and fashion shows, and it affected her naturally beautiful strands. “I do take more care of my hair now, because I lost all of it with extensions. I am more careful, and I do different things,” she said.
7. Christina Milian
The Falling Inn Love actress revealed how her hair loss experience affected her confidence.
“I have always taken pride in not being the girl that leaves hair in the shower. Like, you’re not going to find my hair all over the soap. Well, I became that girl. I had times where I wanted to cry because I wasn’t sure if I’d ever have my hair grow back again,” she shared.
8. Rosie O’Donnell
The comedian believes her hair began to thin due to aging. She shared a selfie on her Twitter account writing, “Male pattern baldness... Aging is fun.”
9. Kristin Davis
This actress also spoke openly about how her hair has changed with age. “My hair just was not what it used to be. It was very fine, like it had gone away, there just was hardly any hair there. When I tried to do something or had to go somewhere, I was like, ’Where is my hair?’” she said.
