A Couple Marries 8 Years After Meeting at a Hospital Where Both Got Heart Transplants on the Same Day

The hospital is the last place we might expect to find love. But for the couple in this story, it was fate that brought them together. Amid recovery from a heart transplant, they shared a moment that would change their lives forever. Their story is a testament to the power of hope and the unexpected ways that love can find us.
The lives of Taylor Givens and Collin Kobelja took a drastic turn when they were both diagnosed with heart conditions at a young age. Givens was a student working on her coursework when she suddenly faced a shocking medical emergency. On the other hand, Kobelja was born with a congenital heart defect, resulting in multiple heart transplants.
Despite facing their diagnoses in different ways — with Givens abruptly receiving life-altering news and Kobelja enduring multiple transplants — fate had a silver lining for them amidst their harrowing experiences.
Fate works in mysterious ways, bringing people together when they need it most. Givens and Kobelja received heart transplants on the same day in the same hospital. While Givens was experiencing her first transplant, Kobelja fought through his second. Miraculously, they ended up in the same recovery room, side by side, but from what Taylor says, “There were really no romantic sparks at first because we were both miserable.”
The spark ignited 5 years later.
Life had a different plan in store for them. On the fifth anniversary of their respective transplants, Givens and Kobelja unexpectedly crossed paths again at their hospital where they would meet their doctors.
As luck would have it, Kobelja contacted Givens right after their meeting to invite her for dinner. For the first time since their surgeries, they could connect outside the hospital and journey into the world beyond. Both being heart transplant recipients, they discovered an instant and profound bond strengthened by their shared experiences of medical adversity.
“It was cute because we had to take our medicine at the same time, the same medicine,” Givens says. “I definitely felt a spark, and I wasn’t expecting that at all.”
The depth of their bond is unique, not just because of their everyday challenges, but also because they draw strength from each other’s support. “It was great to start dating someone to who you don’t have to explain anything,” Givens shared. “You can just live your life in a normal way.”
When 2 people find their perfect match, nothing can ever come between them. Kobelja and Givens were meant to be together. They both share a love for bookstores and video games, with Kobelja being warm and optimistic and Givens being analytical and pragmatic. Together, they bring out the best in each other and complete one another.
After years of dating, the lovely duo tied the knot in 2019 and now live in Maryland, conducting their lives through the adversity that still comes their way. “We’ve both been through essentially one of the worst experiences you can go through in life,” Kobelja said. “It definitely feels like anything else life throws at us, we can handle.”
Despite the couple’s ongoing health struggles, they continue to handle them together. Kobelja received his fourth heart transplant last year, while Givens is in remission from lymphoma. “Having him beside me, I’m not as afraid of things, even things like my mortality,” Givens says of her husband.
Despite facing medical challenges, the couple remains committed to overcoming them with their unwavering love and devotion for each other. “I see him existing and making it through these transplants and thriving, giving me a new sense of hope and purpose,” added Givens.
