Woody Harrelson CONFIRMS He And Matthew McConaughey May Be Biological Brothers and Calls for DNA Test
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have been bromance goals for a few decades now. The 2 have always seemed like kindred spirits, shining together during their numerous on-screen collabs and being genuinely close in real life. But there might actually be a biological explanation for their exceptional connection.
McConaughey and Harrelson have always been close.
The actors’ bromance officially dates back to 1997, just a few years before they acted alongside each other for the first time in EDtv. Since then, they’ve collaborated on the movie, Surfer, Dude (2008), and the TV series, True Detective. Notably, for the hit show, McConaughey personally asked the director to give the second part to Harrelson, and they hit the jackpot.
But their professional relationship aside, Harrelson and McConaughey are genuinely close friends. Harrelson once revealed he takes friendship tours at least once a year, and the Oscar-winning actor is often a part of these.
As for McConaughey, he confirms the friendship and even goes as far as to say even their families are very close: “Where I start and where he ends and where he starts and I end has always been a murky line, and that’s part of our bromance, right? My kids call him Uncle Woody, his kids call me Uncle Matthew.”
According to McConaughey, there’s a good chance they might be related.
There are a few details about their superb connection that made the Interstellar star wonder, as even those close to them note how similar the 2 actors are. McConaughey explained, “My family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me, his family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”
In addition, there seems to have been a time when McConaughey’s mom interacted with Harrelson’s father, which was right after her divorce from the actor’s dad. McConaughey recalled, “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families and etc., and my mom is there. And she says, ’Woody, I knew your dad.’”
This discovery made McConaughey and Harrelson consider taking a DNA test, but McConaughey admits he’s a bit reluctant to have one done. “It’s a little easier for Wood to say, ’Come on, let’s do it,’ because what’s the skin in it for him? It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take the chance to go, ’Wait a minute, you’re telling me my dad may not be my dad of 53 years,’ and believe in it? I got a little more skin in the game.”
Harrelson confirms it.
However, despite McConaughey’s reluctance, Harrelson urged for a DNA test to confirm their relationship. During an appearance on The Late Show, the 61-year-old actor addressed McConaughey’s claims, explaining that he had a chat with McConaughey’s mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe. The conversation led him to consider the possibility that he and 53-year-old McConaughey could indeed be related.
Harrelson elaborated: ‘Well, I’ll just say there is some veracity to that thought because we talked to Ma’ Mac, Matthew’s legitimate mother, and she let us know one time... We were in Greece watching the U.S. team win the World Cup, and I don’t know, I mentioned something about regrets. And I said, “You know, it’s odd that my father has no regrets.” And I have known Ma’ Mac a long time, and she goes, “I knew... your father.” And it was the ellipses I found a little troubling or interesting. “I knew your father.’”
We’ll get an intimate glimpse into their friendship soon enough.
But whether or not McConaughey and Harrelson are actually half-brothers, the 2 won’t let any possible discoveries affect their relationship. The actors are closer than ever now after working on their new series, Brother From Another Mother, which will explore their families in real life.
McConaughey described the show, saying, “And this is a story about — it’s a love story, about us, he and I and our families coming together and the conflicts and comedy that come with it. Where Woody and I are the best of friends, we have different approaches in how we raise our children and how we go about certain things.” We’ll surely be tuning in!
