North Carolina Waiter Proves One Small Act of Kindness Can Change a Family’s Whole Evening in the USA

Kindness can bring people closer through compassion, empathy, and friendship. It can brighten someone’s day at work and create meaningful connections. Even a small act of kindness can make a lasting difference and inspire others to treat people with care and understanding.
Research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that acts of kindness ripple outward through social networks — when one person acts generously, it inspires others to do the same, creating a chain reaction of goodwill. Over time, these micro-moments of compassion compound, strengthening relationships and encouraging a culture where kindness becomes self-sustaining.

simple meal at a Raleigh, North Carolina, restaurant became a memorable experience for Lee Bondurant, a 51-year-old man with cerebral palsy.
On May 28, 2016, Lee was dining with his mother, Linda Bondurant-Snow, at 42nd St. Oyster Bar during Memorial Day weekend. Because Lee is unable to use his hands, Linda was trying to help him eat while also enjoying her own meal. Their waiter, a college student known as Five, noticed the situation and quietly offered to help.
Rather than making Lee feel uncomfortable, Five approached him naturally and asked whether he had ever tried oysters, showing kindness and unexpected compassion. His thoughtful approach turned an ordinary restaurant visit into a beautiful example of compassion, respect, and the kindness found in communities across the United States.

42nd Street Oyster Bar closed a few years ago ... I believe someone is trying to reopen it ...

Good on that waiter going over and above..and of course the manager had to be right behind him so credit to them! And Lee would have felt seen and cared about but also happy for his mum to enjoy her dinner with him. How wonderful.
The young are alot more natural about these sort of things than many of the more mature generation.

That was a wonderful act of humanness and a credit to humanity.

Haha, Valerie! You’re right, it’s an older story (2016), but I think kindness stories are worth sharing no matter how much time has passed. Thanks for reading the Bright Side! ❤️

How do you show compassion or empathy to others?

Five then offered to serve Lee his first oysters, making the moment feel less like assistance and more like sharing a new experience. According to Linda, he handled the situation smoothly and never embarrassed Lee. His kindness allowed Lee to participate in the meal while maintaining his dignity and independence as much as possible.
Linda was deeply moved by the young waiter’s willingness to step in simply because he saw someone who could use a helping hand. Five was not looking for attention or praise; he was simply doing what he believed was right. His small gesture showed how a little awareness and consideration can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day.

This is the kind of story I want to see more of. Quiet kindness with no expectation of recognition ❤️

Linda later shared the story on Lee’s Facebook page, where it received more than 1,300 shares. She praised Five for treating her son with genuine respect and compassion and encouraged others to “pay it forward.” The restaurant’s general manager said Five had been overwhelmed by the attention because he felt he had only done the right thing.
The response from the community showed how strongly people can connect through simple acts of kindness. Lee’s story also reflects the positive outlook he has carried throughout his life, with his mother describing him as someone who lifts others up and continues to have faith in people. His experience reminded many people that kindness does not have to be dramatic to be powerful.

The story of Lee Bondurant shows how one simple act of kindness can make a lasting difference in someone’s life. When a waiter noticed that Lee needed help eating, he stepped in with compassion and treated him with dignity and respect. His thoughtful gesture not only touched Lee and his mother but also inspired many people who heard their story.
It reminds us that kindness does not have to be grand, sometimes, a small act of understanding and care can brighten someone’s day and inspire others to do the same.
