This Can Be Fatal, a Swimming Instructor Warns Parents Not to Put a Towel Around Their Kid’s Shoulders

“I myself, as a parent, did it without even realizing that it was a thing,” Nikki Scarnati, a certified infant swimming instructor has revealed the biggest mistake parents make when they wrap their kids in a towel. Let’s take a look at the life-saving tip from a specialist that may help you keep your kids safe while they’re enjoying a swim.
A simple act can put kids at risk of drowning.
Nikki Scarnati, a swim instructor, shared a TikTok video where she urged parents to never ever put a towel over a child’s shoulders.
She insists that this innocent act can put children at risk of drowning. A kid won’t be able to move their arms underwater if they fall into a swimming pool with a towel that covers their upper body.
Nikki emphasized the risk of wrapping the towel in a wrong way, saying that she, as a parent, did it so many times, without even realizing it was dangerous for her kid. It’s the natural instinct of parents to wrap their kid in a towel after they get out from the water.
“Naturally we wanna cover them like this, right? No, because if they were to fall in the pool this way, all of their limbs are gonna be restricted underneath a wet towel,” the instructor says.
Nikki explained the right way to wrap a towel.
In her video, Nikki urged parents to always wrap the towel under their kids’ arms after drying them off first.
“So when you get them out of the pool, dry their arms off, lift your arms up, but put the towel underneath their arms. That’s right. Make sure your towel is under your little one’s arms. NOT on top. That way, if they end up in the water, they still have access to their limbs to self rescue, and they’re that much safer,” Nikki explained.
