He discovered his artistic talent by accident.

In the summer of 2010, Andoni Bastarrika discovered his talent as a sand artist by accident while playing with his 2 daughters on the beach. As he first dipped his hands into the sand and began shaping it into a little mermaid, he sensed a “fluidity” in his hands. And this was the start of a lifelong passion.

His imagination is his inspiration.

Andoni Bastarrika draws inspiration from his imagination, constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible with sand art. He lets his mind wander to bring his realistic creations to life through his sculptures, using only pictures as references.

The average sculpture needs between 1,100 lbs and 3,300 lbs of sand.

Bringing a sand sculpture to life is no small feat. It requires an ample amount of high-quality sand, ranging from 1,100 lb to 3,300 lb, depending on the size and complexity of the sculpture. After gathering the sand, he sculpts each section, layer by layer, meticulously shaping and smoothing the sand until it reaches its final form.

It’s a process that requires skill, patience, attention to detail, endurance, and determination. Sometimes, a sculpture can take up to 2 days to come to life.

The sand is his mentor.

For Andoni Bastarrika, creating sand sculptures is a humbling experience that teaches him valuable lessons about the dangers of ego and the importance of patience.

“Working with sand can be quite challenging,” he explained, “especially because I work with low-quality sand, meaning that I cannot build high sculptures. But sand has always been my teacher — that’s how it teaches us a lesson about the dangers of ego and trying to go too fast.”

He sculpts animals for a reason.

“There are a lot of reasons why I like to make animal sculptures as well, but one is the fact that animals are free spirits,” says Bastarrika. “Humans can reflect and learn from them.” In fact, we have a lot to learn from animals. These pure creatures know how to savor the moment, love unconditionally, and prioritize playfulness and rest.
