Shrek Is Returning to the Big Screen and We’re Shouting With Delight

year ago

The Shrek franchise has become one of the most successful animated film series in history, grossing over $3.9 billion worldwide. The unconventional story about the love and adventures of the green ogre has captured the hearts of both children and adults. And we are happy to announce that we may be able to watch the next part of this adventure very soon.

Shrek 5 may come back with the original cast.

DreamWorks Studio will be producing the new film, and Chris Meledandri, a producer and creative partner of the studio, confirmed that they are currently in discussions with actors from previous films, like Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy.

While no contracts have been finalized, Meledandri expressed optimism that negotiations will be successful and that the original cast members will return for the new film. “We anticipate the cast coming back,” he said. “Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”

A “Donkey” spinoff is possible too.

Chris Meledandri also discussed the potential for a spin-off film featuring Eddie Murphy’s beloved character, Donkey, from the Shrek franchise. The producer expressed his belief that Donkey is a character who could easily anchor his own movie.

Considering that the studio has already produced 2 successful spin-offs featuring another popular character, Puss in Boots, it’s a pity that the studio hasn’t launched the same project for Donkey, but it still may happen in the future. When Eddie Murphy was asked if he would do another Shrek film, he said: “I’d do it in 2 seconds. I love Donkey.”

Shrek is the second highest-grossing animated franchise.

The first Shrek film was released in 2001 and was met with critical and commercial success, winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Almost a decade later, the principal characters of the franchise were praised by The New York Times as “brilliantly realized” and continue to be as engaging and vital as any characters in the history of animation. The Shrek film series proved to be a financial success as well, ranking as the 17th highest-grossing film franchise of all time and the second-highest-grossing animated franchise.
