Rebel Wilson rose to international fame after playing the iconic character “Fat Amy” in the movie Pitch Perfect. Since then, the actress has been vocal about her weight loss journey, and the reasons behind it, on her social media. While opinions may differ, there is no denying that she has been an advocate for the importance of body positivity and self-love.

Wilson’s stardom came “later in life.”

According to Wilson, after high school, she had an incident that changed the trajectory of her life. The actress remembers she came down with a disease that caused her to have a hallucination. In her vision, she saw herself very clearly becoming a famous actress in Hollywood, and that’s all it took for her to decide how her life would go.

Then, the Pitch Perfect star enrolled in Law school while also working small acting jobs on the side. After having established a career in Australia, Wilson wanted to try her luck in Hollywood. In an interview, she said, “If I don’t go now, it’s a bit late if you’re already 30 to come to Hollywood as a woman.”

Her first acting roles weren’t as well written as the ones she gets now.

At first, Wilson had to start, as many actors do, by not being able to choose her own projects, she said, “Coming up in the industry, you kind of get the crappier roles. The roles just weren’t as well-written or as well-developed.”

Another challenge she had to face was being able to transition from comedy to drama. In an interview, the star gushed, “I was very much stereotyped into playing the fat funny girl, which I loved and which I played into and made millions of dollars doing.”

Her weight loss made people treat her differently.

In 2020, right after Christmas, Wilson made an announcement on her social media, saying “For me, 2020 is going to be called ’The Year of Health.’” The actress decided to make some changes in her habits, saying, “For me, it was so much bigger, it was about just being the healthiest version of me. So it wasn’t about the size or a number.”

To Wilson, being stereotyped in certain roles wasn’t a negative experience, but she did notice a change in Hollywood when she started losing weight. The star is conscious of the different treatment she receives, and she said, “There can be benefits to that and people look at you and say, ’Oh, she’s different now, maybe we should cast her in different projects.’ Unfortunately, in Hollywood, people need to see you differently in order to cast you differently or give you new opportunities.”

In the same interview, the actress also stated, “I know what it’s like to be a woman who is essentially invisible to most people because of not being seen as traditionally beautiful. I know what it is like when nobody holds the door open for you.”

In recent news, Wilson opened up about why she couldn’t lose weight at the beginning of her career in Hollywood.

In a podcast interview, Wilson revealed that she couldn’t lose weight while filming the movie Pitch Perfect due to a contract she had to sign. “You can’t lose more than 10 pounds or gain more than 10 pounds.” But she had been thinking about making some changes in her habits, so she had to wait until the filming of the movies was over to start her weight loss journey.
