10 Crochet Masterpieces That Teach Us One Hobby Can Fill Even the Heaviest Hearts With Happiness

My grandmother kept a basket of yarn next to her armchair and most nights after dinner she’d just pick up a hook without saying anything about it. I honestly never asked what she was making most of the time. Kind of wish I had, looking back.
That being said, a reader sent us the story and her family made the exact same assumption mine did — that crochet was just something grandmothers do to pass the evening, nothing more to it than that. Turns out they were wrong, and once you read what she left behind, you’ll probably think twice the next time you see someone working a hook and yarn.
Here’s her story, plus 10 more about knitting, crochet, and the kind of handicraft that ends up carrying a lot more than anyone expects.
1. “Just finished what is now my new favorite hoodie.”

2. “I’m really happy with my Book Pillow.”
3. “I finally finished my second pattern.”

Oh, WOW! Absolutely stunning. Makes me want to put down my knitting needles and pick up my crochet hooks again. Thank you and congratulations😊
4. “Completed my black cat tote bag.”
5. “Crocheted bird blanket.”

Fantastic
Gorgeous be proud!
IT IS BEAUTIFUL. GREAT JOB.
“I just wanted to showcase this crocheted weighted blanket my sister Evie made for me for my birthday. She’s been working on it since April and it’s beautiful!”
6. “Crocheted a lil hat for my cat.”

That poor cat. Please don't torture your pets with clothing.
7. This crochet T-Rex looks unbelievable!
8. “I crocheted the ‘Unicorn Dreams’ pillow for my two little princesses.”
9. “I made my own parasol!”
10. “Four new flowers have joined the collection.”
Bonus: a story from one of our readers.
My grandmother crocheted every night for 40 years. When she passed, she left one instruction. Don’t dig under the rose bush by the back fence. My uncle dug it up 3 weeks after she passed, “looking for pipes.” He lied to us and found a tin box. Inside were forty-something tiny crocheted baby booties, each one wrapped in wax paper, each one with a name and a date pinned to it in her handwriting, the oldest one from 1984.
We didn’t recognize most of the names. My mom finally placed one — a cousin on my grandmother’s side who’d lost her baby during pregnancy back in the 90s, something nobody ever brought up at family dinners. Once she said that out loud, we started putting it together. Every pair in that box belonged to a baby somewhere in our family who didn’t make it.
She never told any of these women what she was doing. My mom found eleven of them still alive and mailed the booties back with a short note. Most of them called crying. One woman, now in her nineties, said it was the first thing anyone had ever given her for the daughter she lost over 60 years ago and was never really allowed to grieve properly.
We put the tin back empty, right where it was. Forty years of stitching, just waiting for the right people to finally get it.
