11 Facts About Our Favorite TV Series From the ’90s We Didn’t Know About

There are series for which we keep a place in our hearts. Especially if they were produced in the ’90s and early ’00s. We’d all gather in front of the TV and watch our favorite characters’ adventures back then. And since they impressed us deeply, we remember them fondly. Maybe that’s why we always want to know more about the actors who appeared in those movies.

Bright Side took a little trip back in time to share with you some exciting details behind the most successful shows of the ’90s.

1. Courteney Cox inspired Carlton for his dance in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton, confessed that the famous dance they performed in multiple episodes was inspired by none other than one of the main characters from Friends. Alfonso practically copied Courteney Cox’s moves in Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” music video.

The actor also added his own touch by copying Eddie Murphy’s moves in his monologue “White People Can’t Dance” and creating the perfect combination that would be remembered for years.

2. Rachel’s first boyfriend was originally going to play Ross.

It’s pretty hard to imagine other actors in any of the roles of the most famous group of friends on television. However, Mitchell Whitfield, who played Barry, the boyfriend Rachel jilted at the altar, was actually meant to play Ross’ character. The role was practically his until David Schwimmer decided to audition at the last minute and ended up being the chosen one. It was undoubtedly a missed opportunity for Mitchell, but we couldn’t imagine a better Ross Geller.

3. The Silence of the Lambs inspired Agent Scully from The X-Files.

One of the most original series of the 90s was undoubtedly The X-Files, both for its plot and for the chemistry between Agent Mulder and Agent Scully. Probably few people know that the character of Dana Scully, played by Gillian Anderson, is inspired by Clarice Starling, Jodie Foster’s role in The Silence of the Lambs, thanks to which her career took off.

4. Shannen Doherty had to leave Beverly Hills, 90210 over a haircut.

The actress who played Brenda Walsh in the famous teen series was fired during the fourth season, generating speculation. However, according to producer Larry Mollin, the straw that broke the camel’s back was that Shannen decided to cut her hair without telling anyone, which ruined the continuity of an episode they were filming.

Although her cycle on Beverly Hills, 90210 ended abruptly, she later returned to work with producer Aaron Spelling on Charmed.

5. Miss Fine’s spectacular wedding dress in The Nanny cost more than $10,000.

There is no doubt that Miss Fine, played by Fran Drescher, became a fashion icon of the 1990s thanks to her eye-catching outfits. However, there was one in particular for which designers went the extra mile. It was the spectacular wedding dress that the nanny wore for her long-awaited wedding to Mr. Sheffield.

The dress cost around $12,000. The actress revealed that they found the outfit in a very exclusive bridal store, and the ceremony was so meaningful that she felt that she was organizing her wedding in real life.

6. Ryan Reynolds was close to joining the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

It could have been a great delight to see the Deadpool star in the role of Xander, the best friend of TV’s most famous vampire slayer. However, Reynolds revealed that he turned down the role because he didn’t want to play a high school kid right out of high school.

7. Boy Meets World kids were also schoolmates in real life.

The series that conquered thousands of teenagers worldwide was not too far off from reality. The actors who were part of the cast were teenagers, so they had to fulfill their school obligations. Therefore, in between filming, they spent their time in a real classroom built for them on the set with real teachers.

8. Blossom’s main character was initially going to be her brother

Blossom’s life around her brothers and father caused a massive interest in the nineties audience. However, the show’s creators said that her older brother was originally going to be the main character, and the girl would play the role of the younger sister. One of the executive producers of the NBC network suggested that Blossom become the main character. This, without a doubt, was an excellent opportunity for young Mayim Bialik.

9. Frasier’s set was one of the most expensive at the time.

Designers spent about half a million dollars to decorate the apartment of the successful therapist Frasier Cane. The popular character’s sofa alone was a Coco Chanel replica that cost $20,000 and was accompanied by other antique furniture. Indeed, the expense must have been worth it since the series became a success during its 11 seasons.

10. David Hasselhoff rejected Leonardo DiCaprio to be part of Baywatch.

Many stars, such as Jason Momoa, Carmen Electra, and even Sofia Vergara, started on Baywatch. Leonardo DiCaprio also auditioned for the role of Hobie, the son of Lieutenant Mitch Buchannon. However, he was turned down by David Hasselhoff himself because he felt Leo looked too old for the role. In the end, they chose Jeremy Jackson.

11. Seinfeld’s idea came about after a chat in the supermarket.

The idea for the hit ’90s show came about after a conversation between friends at the grocery store. Comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David were making quirky jokes in line, so it occurred to them that they hadn’t seen a similar format on TV and that maybe it could work. And they were right!
