Much more common than you would think, sometimes 3 or 4 sets. I knew a doctor in Atlanta who specializes in removing them.

The wrong response, actually. The right response would be to gently and kindly tell the kid that it's not nice to take what doesn't belong to them, and then to thank them for having been honest enough to bring the item back. That way, the kid learns a valuable lesson (that stealing is wrong, and that honesty is a trait that people appreciate), and neither party ends up being hurt (the child isn't scared/traumatized, and the shopkeeper doesn't lose inventory). Bonus points if the shopkeeper is welcoming to the child when the child comes in at another time, so that the child understands that what happened isn't being held against them.
