Many of us have secrets. Some of them are harmless, while others can change someone’s life dramatically. But no matter how diligently we keep them, there is a high probability that sooner or later they will come out, leaving a trail of unexpected revelations, scandalous confessions and surprising twists of fate. The heroes of our stories know this firsthand.

  • When I was a student, we had our own group. And Irene joined us, she was a nice, quiet girl with glasses. Everyone liked her, and then my friend Nataly said, “I overheard her saying nasty things about us behind our backs.” No one expected such a thing from the quiet Irene.
The truth came out in an unusual way. I met Nataly’s relative and was surprised to learn that it was Nataly who was saying nasty things about everyone. © KeraTamara / Pikabu
  • I’m the only child of my mother. When I moved away to university in another country, my mom became sad, sitting at home every night watching TV. I wanted to cheer her up and decided to give her a dog for New Year. I kept it a secret, but she found out somehow...
A couple of days before New Year’s Eve, she calls and says she won’t get a dog. Who knew it was too late? So, now we live: me, my husband, and the dog. © Overheard / Ideer
  • One guy started writing nasty things under my posts. He introduced himself as a PhD and named the university he studied at.
It’s funny because we studied at the same university in 1979. And we have the same major. But I’ve never met him. The cheeky bastard even posted his PhD certificate.
But there was one thing he screwed up with. The font! He chose a font that was invented in 1982! That’s how I found out his certificate was a fake. © Ian Williams / Quora
  • One day, my sister and I were arguing in the kitchen. Sister, “You’re finished! I’m telling Mom.” And at that moment, I saw out of the corner of my eye that Mom was standing outside the door. Me, “Mom won’t believe you!”
My sister said, “She will, because she always believes me when I cry, and I can cry at any time.” Then Mom came in, and I had to bite my cheek to keep from laughing. © Victoria Baker / Quora
  • I discovered by accident that a relative of mine had been a ladies’ man all his life. One of his flings gave him 2 children while the woman was married to another man. That man knew all about it, but they were still together and raised those kids. © Kate Anderson / Quora
  • I’m a manager at a clothing retail shop. I was promoted and moved to another city. A customer came to me, I helped her to choose clothes.
At the checkout, she says, “Will you give me a discount? I have a friend who works here as a supervisor.” I thought she was talking about the former manager.
And then she said my name! And she even knew what city I was from. So, she never got a discount. © Jean Miller / Quora
  • A friend of mine always hated cooking. She lived with her grandmother. Her grandmother decided it was wrong, a girl should be able to cook. So, she decided to send her to college to be a chef.
She took her granddaughter to the city and applied. The next day, my friend went there again and transferred the documents to a college to become a car mechanic. She lived in a dorm, tried not to go home. She miraculously concealed her specialty.
At the graduation, of course, the secret came out. Now she works in the car service, and is happy. © Overheard / Ideer
  • My sister called her boyfriend and started begging him to take her to the shopping center. He replied that he was busy. Then my sister winked at me and started sobbing. She begged him on the phone for a long time.
Toward the end, she paused, saying through her sobs that she needed a handkerchief. She hung up the phone and turned to me, “See, I always get my way.” Her boyfriend chose that exact minute to come into our room (Mum let him in) and hear this. © Victoria Baker / Quora
  • Met a girl: decent, modest, from a good family. I fell in love, decided to marry her. I was her first man. Right before the wedding, I accidentally found out something that shouldn’t have.
The girl’s younger brother is her child, whom the parents adopted. It turns out that both she and her parents lied to my face all this time. Now I’m sitting, thinking, to marry or not. Can I trust her now? © Overheard / Ideer
  • Once, our office worker fell asleep sitting at the computer. She slept for a long time. And suddenly, bang! The director walks in.
She immediately wakes up and starts to show a flurry of activity: tapping on the keyboard, tugging on the mouse. That’s when the director spotted her, saying, “Lisa, wake up, we’ve had a blackout for an hour and a half.” © oseledich / Pikabu
  • I had a boyfriend. Once he asked me to lend him some money, my budget was tight, but I gave it to him. Later I accidentally found out from my friends that they went to the countryside for a couple of days with a large group of people, and they all pitched in for the trip. When everyone asked why he was without me, he said that I had no money, so I didn’t go. © Overheard / Ideer
  • A girl from our group got married secretly. We didn’t know who her husband was. We held a grudge against her. One of her friends stood up for her, saying it was none of our business.
Then we found out that her husband was that friend’s ex, who had left her a year ago. We all knew that the breakup had been hard on her, and she still hadn’t forgotten him. She no longer makes excuses for her secrecy. © Overheard / Ideer
  • I noticed a woman parking in the disabled spot and going into the supermarket. I checked: there was no disabled sticker on the car.
In the supermarket, my daughter and I stood behind the offender, and I said loudly for all to hear, “Over here, darling, and be careful of this lady as she is disabled.” The woman fell for the bait and indignantly said, “I’m not disabled!”
Then I asked, “Really? Then why the hell did you park in the disabled space?” At that moment, she became quiet and quickly pushed her trolley away. I could see a number of smiles around me. © Warren Hyde / Quora
  • I accidentally found out my daughter’s laptop password. I couldn’t resist and started going through all the folders and files, reading messages and mail. Mostly everything was on studies, even in correspondence with classmates, nothing was disturbing, but I came across a hidden folder without a name.
It turned out that she writes very interesting stories and beautiful poems, I got carried away. Now I’m tormented. I really want to brag to my friends, but I realize that I can’t tell anyone. If my daughter finds out that I got into her laptop, she will not forgive me, and we already have a strained relationship because my friends talk too much. © Overheard / Ideer
  • I got busy with the family tree and learnt a couple of family secrets. My uncle and aunt got married a year earlier than they told their children.
Turns out, the bride was 6 months pregnant at the wedding. That explains why we don’t have any of their wedding photos and why they weren’t invited to family gatherings. In those days, people had different values. © Kate Anderson / Quora
  • I thought that my father was cheating on my mother: phone calls, secret correspondence, could leave home unexpectedly and go “on business.” And he suddenly had money and was so happy. Well, I thought he’s found himself a rich lady!
I took a moment to dive into his phone. It turned out that Dad got a new job as a private taxi driver, and all these calls and sudden absences on business were quite understandable. Indeed, he had a new woman — a job. © amequi12 / Pikabu
  • We didn’t live long with my daughter’s father. He didn’t work, didn’t care about the family — we divorced. My husband always claimed he was an orphan, no kin.
My daughter is 27 years old. She started looking for her relatives and found out that her father had a younger sister. The woman was surprised: she thought her brother was dead. The last time the family saw him was in 1973. © Elizabeth Jones / Quora
  • I live with my grandmother. I decided to get my tongue pierced. I learnt to speak clearly with a swollen tongue, to talk with my mouth barely open, to eat in such a way that a fork or a spoon would not hit the piercing.
However, I got caught after 3 months, when my grandmother decided to scare me, and I screamed out of surprise. © Overheard / Ideer
