Queen Elizabeth II’s death at age 96 ended her record-setting 70-year monarchy. Many members of the royal family have shared their thoughts and respects for the longest-reigning British monarch since her passing in early September 2022. Today, we want to share with our readers the relationship Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, had with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Recently, she shared her feelings about her late grandmother-in-law in a new interview.

How they first met

The Duchess of Sussex made her first official solo public appearance with the Queen in June 2018, less than a month after Meghan officially joined the royal family with her wedding to Prince Harry. Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, stepped down from their senior royal duties in 2020, leaving the United Kingdom and making a home for themselves in Southern California.

Harry and Meghan named their second child, a daughter, Lilibet, after Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nickname. In a new interview, Meghan Markle honored Queen Elizabeth II as “the most shining example” of female leadership as she reflected on their relationship weeks after the British monarch’s death.

The Duchess of Sussex feels “really grateful” to be able to support her husband, Prince Harry, following the recent death of his grandmother, she told Variety. She indicates that it’s so beautiful to look at the legacy that Her Majesty Elizabeth was able to leave on so many fronts. She feels deep gratitude to have been able to spend time with her and get to know her. “It’s been a complicated time, but my husband, ever the optimist, said, ’Now she’s reunited with her husband.’”

She can’t forget the first time they met.

She added, “I’ve reflected on that first official engagement that I had with her, how special that felt.” Meghan considers herself fortunate and continues to be proud to have experienced warmth with the matriarch of the family.

Life continues on.
