I Refuse to Stop Crocheting at My Desk After Finding Out I’m Underpaid — Now HR Is Calling

Half a granny square, tucked in a desk drawer between meetings, doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that could blow up an office. But ask anyone who’s counted stitches through a mind-numbing conference call and they’ll tell you it’s not really about the yarn. Research published in Applied Cognitive Psychology had people doodle through a boring phone message and found they remembered 29% more of it afterward than the people who only sat there.
And, apart from this, a separate study published in the journal Art Therapy measured something more physical: people who spent 45 minutes making art, hands busy and mind loosely occupied, showed a statistically significant drop in cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone, afterward. So when one reader’s boss decided her hook and yarn were a problem, he wasn’t picking a fight about a hobby. He was about to find out she’d already discovered something far more annoying than a ball of acrylic on her desk: how little her job was actually paying her.
Here is everything Monica told us.

you are beautiful
I wish i was young like her
Hi Bright Side,
My name’s Monica and I will soon be 34. I’ve spent 6 years as a project coordinator at a mid-size marketing firm. 2 months ago, a new hire mentioned her starting salary at lunch. It was almost 20% more than I make, for the same job, with less experience than I have. I went home that night and dug through every salary report I could find. Turns out I’d been underpaid for years (emphasis on years).
I decided not to quit and not make any scene (like others would do). I dug out a crochet hook that I hadn’t even touched since college and started bringing it to my desk. I didn’t crochet during meetings, nothing that cut into actual work, to be on the safe side. My hands needed to do something that wasn’t handing over more free effort to a company that clearly didn’t think I was worth much. So I was crocheting during my lunch mostly.
My manager clocked it within a week. “What are you, 12?” he said, standing over my desk. “Clients walk by here; do that at home to resign!” I asked if he’d noticed I hadn’t missed a deadline in 6 years. He said that wasn’t the point, it was about “optics.” I told him the optics I was actually stuck on were the ones on my pay stub, next to a coworker who’d been there eight months.
He brought it up again two days later, this time saying it “set a tone” for the team. I kept crocheting anyway. The thing is, I didn’t do it to prove anything. I’m mature enough, so it was the one 5 minutes of my day that felt like mine. By Friday I’d sent HR a formal pay equity complaint with the salary data attached, and mentioned, almost as an afterthought, that I’d also been told to put away a hobby that wasn’t hurting anyone.
Now HR has asked to meet with both of us, and my manager’s gone silent except for the occasional clipped email. I stand by the pay complaint completely. What I keep going back and forth on is whether the crochet was really worth digging in over. Was that the right thing to hold my ground on, or did I just make everything messier than it needed to be?
— Monica A.

The timing isn’t a coincidence, most people reach for something repetitive right around when stress spikes, and the research above backs that up. Her manager never actually engaged with the pay complaint, “optics” sounded better than admitting he had no answer for it.
Would you have put the hook away to keep things simple, or was Monica right to hold her ground on both fronts? Tell us below.
Management has no rights to encroach on your lunch hour. Other employees find much more to do on their lunch hour than crochet. His only worry should be the action that HR plans to take on the discrepancy in her pay.

One thing for sure, crocheting isn’t only for 12 years olds. No. But crocheting at your working hours is not the best idea. Love, Anne
