Meghan Markle Reveals Why She Quit Her Job as a Briefcase Girl on “Deal or No Deal” in 2007
During a conversation on her podcast Archetypes, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex recalled her job on the game show Deal or No Deal 15 years ago. She candidly opened up about the way it made her feel, and what made her quit it after some time. While doing so, she hoped that her revelation can bring some change to the future generations.
In 2006, Meghan Markle was a 25-year-old aspiring actress when she landed a role as a briefcase girl on the TV game show Deal or No Deal. Her role involved keeping tabs on briefcase #24 and showing the hidden sum inside when a contestant called her number out.
And even though the show wasn’t focused on acting, the young Meghan admitted to feeling thankful to have a job that will allow her to pay her bills.
But her stay at the show wasn’t long-lived and the future duchess made the decision to leave the program midway through the season in 2007.
Looking back at her experience, Meghan explained “I was so much more than what was being objectified on the stage. I didn’t like feeling forced to be all looks. And little substance.” She added, “I was grateful for the job, but not about how it made me feel, which was not smart.”
The California-born actress went more into detail about why she felt uncomfortable and eventually decided to call it quits. She recalled that the show “was solely about our beauty” and that she and the other briefcase girls “were even given spray-tan vouchers each week.”
Moreover, Meghan also revealed that a woman “in charge” of the show would tell her to “suck it in” before filming began, presumably asking her to suck in her stomach on camera.
Meghan, who got married to Prince Harry back in 2018, is naturally leading a life far different from her days on Deal or No Deal. But the mother of 3-year-old son Archie and 16-month-old daughter Lilibet wanted to look back on her past experience hoping that it can help make a difference. She said she wants Lilibet to be valued first for her mind and not her beauty.
Meghan explained, “I want our daughter to aspire to be slightly higher,” and then added, “I want my Lili to want to be educated and want to be smart and to pride herself on those things.”
What do you think about Meghan’s experience? Do you agree that brains should always come before beauty?
