Mother of 2, Grimes Reveals She Doesn’t Identify With the Word “Mom”

Singer Grimes, who often makes headlines for her unique fashion sense and music style, opened up about her journey as a mother. She gave fans an insight into her family and about what changes motherhood has brought up for her — including the ups and the downs, while also revealing that she isn’t comfortable with the word “mom.”

Giving birth was very special to her.

The 34-year-old who welcomed her first baby with Elon Musk in 2020 admits giving birth to her son X Æ A-Xii helped her grow as an artist. “I think having a baby was a big kind of like rebirth for me, like artistically,” she added while getting ready for the Met Gala.

But it hasn’t been easy. During pregnancy, Grimes revealed having complications that made physical work really difficult for her. Even though she got inspired to write new material, she confessed that having a baby while also working is hard, and she couldn’t help but wonder how moms out there do it so wonderfully.

Her son calls her by her first name.

Instead of calling her “mom,” her 2-year-old son X calls her “Claire.” According to Grimes, it is because he’s very perceptive and can sense she doesn’t like it. “Being a mother feels weird to say for some reason,” she adds, revealing that she respects the word but can’t identify with it.

She and Elon have 2 kids together.

Along with their son X Æ A-Xii, the couple also share a daughter Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, born in 2021. She was born via surrogate, and they call her “Y” for short, to go well with their firstborn “X.” Though Grimes’ first choice was naming her “Odysseus Musk.”

Separated, but the love is still there

The couple confirmed their split in September 2021, but they still love each other. Talking about the relationship they currently share, Grimes said, “Me and E have broken up...he’s my best friend and the love of my life.”
