What If You Got $1 Million but Must Spend It in 15 Days

Curiosities

You’re heading down the highway speeding like there’s no tomorrow in your old car. You arrive an hour late, so your boss gets in your face and fires you. You pack up your stuff from your cubicle and drive back home.

When you arrive, you check out some vacancies and see an interesting offer. “Experiment! We’ll give you 1 million dollars, only if you know how to spend it wisely within 15 days.” You laugh it off and apply via your phone. You fill in some basic info about yourself, including your bank account, and then sleep it off.

The next day you get a notification from your bank saying that you received 1 million dollars. You check your account multiple times, not believing what’s happening. You receive a message from an unknown number saying, “Dear contestant, thank you for participating in our experiment. There are only seven rules to follow:

Do not leave the money untouched in your account for more than 15 days.
Do not transfer it to another account.
Do not tell anyone about this.
Do not invest the money in anything.
Do not lose the money.
Do not keep your phone away from you.
Everything you purchase will be taken away from you once the experiment is over.”

Your phone automatically downloads an app with a clock timer that begins counting down. You get dressed and head down to your bank to ask for more details on the matter. You go to the teller and explain the situation to her.

You receive a notification from the timer app saying that you lost 24 hours since you told someone about the experiment. You rush out of there and head back home. Now you have 14 days left. You pick up the phone to call your friend but stop halfway. You try to see if the money is real by ordering some food and paying through your account. Success!

You spent $20 on Chinese food. So the money isn’t fake. You didn’t receive any notification from the app. And no one is barging through the door demanding the money. Your account shows that you’re now missing $20. The food finally arrives, and you gulp it down quickly. You order something a lot more expensive and pay $200 for a meal fit for a king.

After you finish it, you head outside and look at your embarrassing car. You drive over to a car shop and come back out with a sports car. Everyone stops and stares at you. Many people are sharing pictures and videos of your car on social media. You just spent $100,000 on it, so you take it out for a spin.

But not so fast; you crossed a speed limit and get charged with a ticket. You pay up and continue driving through the countryside. You stop and see a huge mansion with fountains and acres of land behind. You find a phone number and ask for its price. The next day, you check out the property and pay up for a new luxurious house. You have 12 days left.

You start buying new furniture, including a $30,000 grand piano and an exotic fish tank. You install a swimming pool with waterfalls and a mini-golf course. You check your balance and see that you still have around $300,000 remaining on your account. You hire a bunch of people for cleaning, gardening, and security.

And at the end of the day, you throw a huge party and invite everyone you know and don’t know. Music is pumping, food’s everywhere, and games for everyone. People are trying to find out where you got all that money, but you just ignore the question or tell them that you inherited the money. Time passes, and you go upstairs to your bedroom while everyone is still partying.

The next day you go back to your office and tell your boss that you’re the boss now. Everyone in the office gives you some angry looks, but you ignore it. You start eating at the finest restaurants and buying the most expensive watches and gadgets.

You stand on a balcony and throw cash all over the street, and watch everyone running around and snatching up the money. You hire a limo with party music to drive around the city. You end up buying your favorite restaurant and renaming it after yourself.

You turned yourself into a celebrity. You still have a lot of cash left and plenty of time, so you decide to book a flight all the way to Tokyo for a quick vacay. You arrive and stay at one of the most expensive hotels available and go on a quick tour around the city. You have some expensive sushi and buy some never-before-seen tech. After a while, you go back to the hotel and realize that you’re craving some Italian.

You’re now in Rome, and you check yourself into a hotel facing the Colosseum. You wander around the city and finally satisfy your Italian food craving. You visit more of the sights around and then decide to see the rest of Europe.

You’re having a croissant facing the Eiffel Tower while a bunch of people are taking pictures and playing with their dogs. After visiting many museums, you go to a restaurant and pay for everyone inside. France is cool, but now off to Spain for some tapas and soccer.

You check out the city and realize that you miss some action. The beautiful sights and history are good, but it’s time for something exotic. The Sun’s hot, and the wind’s warm. You’re in a safari jeep with a group of people driving in the open savannah. Any minute you’ll be seeing some amazing animals like giraffes, lions, and hippos. As the jeep goes deeper into the heart of the savannah, you spot some hyenas chasing some zebras and giraffes eating some leaves.

The next part of the trip takes you on a deep cave exploration to see some animals and rock formations. After a long day, you head to the hotel, which is right in the middle of the savannah. You sleep with a view facing the entire open savannah. You lie down in bed with mosquitos buzzing around you. You still have seven days left.

You’re now in the Himalayas, trekking along the cold mountain pass. You see a bunch of fellow hikers out there enjoying life and preparing for Mount Everest. You decide to fly out to the Amazon River and skydive down there. As you land, you go through the dense rainforest and encounter anacondas, cute sloths, and other wild creatures.

The next day, you fly out to Hawaii and relax on the beach, drinking ice-cool fruity drinks. You go surfing and jet skiing all day and party by the beach at night. You haven’t slept properly during these past days.

You hire a private boat and sail through the ocean, witnessing some of the most amazing sights you’ve ever seen. You hop from island to island, exploring new lands and eating fresh coconuts. But you start to feel homesick and tired from constantly being on a plane and at different hotels. After a whole day of sailing and a few flights, you finally arrive at the mansion.

It’s dark with so much furniture displaced all over. You don’t feel quite at home. Many of the people helping around the house have gone home, so you’re all alone. You take a walk around and notice how most of the house is damaged. You bought the house without even properly inspecting it.

You look at the app and see that you have less than an hour until the experiment is over. You check your balance and see that you barely have anything left. You head up to the balcony and see everything you bought, not knowing why you even bought it all. You don’t even know how to play the piano. After a while, you receive a text message: “Thank you for participating in the Experiment. Your contribution really helped us a lot.”

You try calling them, but their line is off the hook. There’s no way you can get the money to pay for the bills and overheads. Your only choice is to return everything and go back to your old life. You go back on your phone to look for more jobs. But suddenly, you see another experiment that catches your eye.
