No 2 people on this planet share the same body odor and each person has their own unique smell. While it is only natural for our bodies to produce different scents, it could be a cause for concern when those odors become particularly strong and unpleasant. But don’t worry! We have a simple solution for you, made with ingredients that may already be sitting around in your home.

We at Bright Side are enthusiasts of homemade and all-natural alternatives for beauty and self-care products. We are excited to share these finds with you!

1. Vinegar foot soak

Vinegar is a powerful antibacterial home remedy that fights various forms of bacteria, fungi, and microbes due to the acetic acid that it contains. Acetic acid has been proven to improve foot odor and athlete’s foot.

To make a vinegar foot soak, combine:

  • 1 part vinegar
  • 2 parts water
  • a few drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)

Stir them in a basin and let your feet soak for 10 to 20 minutes. Do this once a day and watch your smelly feet go away!

2. Coffee grounds body scrub

Coffee grounds are known for their odor-absorbing properties. Because of their powerful aroma, you can scrub your hands with some ground coffee to remove other strong kitchen smells like fish, garlic, and onion. Alternatively, you can also use coffee grounds to reduce body odor, by using them as a body scrub to slough away dead skin cells and to reveal new and clean skin.

To make a coffee body scrub, combine:

  • 1 part coffee grounds
  • 1 part coconut or olive oil
  • a few drops of your favorite essential oil

Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl or jar.

To use, wet your skin and gently apply the scrub on your body. Massage gently to exfoliate your skin. Rinse with mild soap and water. Use the scrub once a week or whenever you are cooking with smelly ingredients.

3. Lemon water cleanser

Lemons are rich in vitamin C and citric acid, which help protect your body from odor-causing bacteria. Drinking lemon water and applying lemon juice to your underarms can change your body’s pH level, which can also improve your body odor. Take note that medical experts have found that the acids found in lemons can react harshly when exposed to the sun, so it is best to apply the cleanser at night or when you know you will be staying indoors.

To make a lemon water cleanser, mix:

  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 cup water

You can drink this mixture or dip a cotton ball and apply the cleanser on your skin.

4. Alcohol odor neutralizer

Because foul odors are typically caused by bacteria, the bacteria-killing properties of alcohol can help keep away strong body odor. When you are in need of a quick deodorant, spritz yourself with some rubbing alcohol, and apply it on your sweaty underarms. Avoid using alcohol on freshly shaven or waxed skin to prevent alcohol stings.

5. Coconut oil mouthwash

Coconut oil is rich in antibacterial properties that have been proven to help oral hygiene. This versatile oil can reduce plaque, gingivitis, and bad breath.

To use coconut oil as a mouthwash, also known as oil pulling, gargle:

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of extra virgin coconut oil

Swish it around your mouth and gargle in your throat for at least 5 minutes, or go as long as 20 minutes. Spit out the oil and wash it down with some warm water.

6. Baking soda deodorant

Baking soda has been used in many industries as an odor neutralizer because of its powerful odor absorption properties. You might also find that many commercial deodorants contain baking soda to help fight body odor. However, applying baking soda in its pure form directly on your skin can cause sensitivity reactions, so it is best to mix it with something else before you use it.

To make a baking soda dry deodorant, combine:

  • 1 part baking soda
  • 6 parts cornstarch

Place in a shaker or powder bottle and shake gently before applying.

To make a baking soda wet deodorant, combine:

  • 1 part baking soda
  • 2 parts coconut oil

Mix the ingredients in a small bowl and massage gently on skin. For a non-oil deodorant, make a paste with a teaspoon of baking soda and some water. Apply on underarms and allow the paste to completely dry before getting dressed.

7. Garlic tonic odor remover

Although many find its smell overpowering and unpleasant, garlic has been found to combat body odors due to the antibacterial properties it contains. By simply consuming more garlic in your diet, strong body odors can be improved.

To make a garlic tonic odor remover, combine:

  • 3 cloves peeled garlic
  • 2 cups water

Bring the garlic and water to boil for 10 to 15 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool and strain. Apply the tonic on your body and leave for about 30 minutes before rinsing off. Repeat this procedure on a daily basis and watch what happens next!

I tried it several times and got rather mixed feelings about this. It does remove the smell but you still get sweaty. So you have wet armpits if it's warm outside.
