10 Times Royals Wore the Clothes of a Relative or Imitated Their Style Pretty Well
Lending a garment to a close friend or family member is something that many of us may have done at some point. But it may sound strange to know that sharing clothes is also a well-recognized custom among royal families. Moreover, imitating someone else’s style is often a source of praise.
At Bright Side, we discovered several royals who have fearlessly decided to follow the style of their relatives and wore precisely the same clothes or at least managed to reproduce their looks.
1. Carole Middleton
The mother of the Duchess of Cambridge has shown that she shares more than a good relationship with her daughter, as we have seen her wearing dresses that Kate had already worn. The Royal Ascot has been one of the events witnessing that. There, she wore the pink dress that, a year ago, Kate had worn at one of her events.
2. Princess Victoria of Sweden
In the case of Swedish royalty, Victoria lent her mother’s dress. Silvia happily agreed to give her the garment, so she could imprint her stamp on an outfit with a long past. The design appeared at various events for more than 25 years.
It was first worn by Queen Silvia in 1995, then again in 2005, during a state visit to Australia, and in 2018, Victoria couldn’t resist wearing it to that year’s Nobel Prize banquet.
3. Princess Elizabeth of Denmark
In Denmark, Princess Elizabeth decided to pull out of the closet a white pair of trousers and a jacket suit that her mom wore in 2017 to show it off at a traditional Danish ceremony she attended with her entire family.
4. Princess Beatrice
One of the Princesses of York took the tradition of wearing something borrowed on her wedding day very seriously, as she got her dress from her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. With some modifications from the one the queen originally wore in 1962, her granddaughter made it look new even after six decades.
5. Luisa Mountbatten-Windsor
The granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II knew how to value a dress that her mother, the Countess of Wessex, had worn in 2016 during the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. A couple of years later, when her cousin Prince Harry and Megan Markle married, Lady Louise brought it out again and paired it with an eye-catching headpiece.
6. Prince Louis copied his father.
The story is not too different for the British monarchy’s youngest members. Prince William’s youngest son was pictured at Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee celebrations wearing the sailor suit his father wore at the same event 37 years earlier.
7. Princess Charlotte inherited her uncle’s shoes.
Also, the daughter of the Cambridge house knows what it’s like to inherit clothes. When she accompanied her parents on a royal tour in 2017, she wore red shoes that her uncle, Prince Harry, used to wear when he was just a child.
8. Siblings George and Charlotte shared clothes.
Kate and William’s first two children have shared some clothes. Thus, a blue cardigan with white embroidery on the top first belonged to George, who posed elegantly with the garment next to his grandmother and cousins for a family portrait. When he grew up, he passed it on to his sister Charlotte. She wore it over a dress for a family photo, but this time with her parents.
9. Meghan Markle recreated her mother-in-law’s look.
On one of Meghan’s official trips with Prince Harry, she chose to wear an outfit that was very similar to the one worn by Princess Diana when she visited Argentina in 1995. Twenty-three years later, it seems that Markle wanted to remember her mother-in-law by wearing a dress with a similar style and color.
10. Kate Middleton modernized one of Lady Di’s most memorable outfits.
With her own personal touch, Kate Middleton wore a black polka dot suit to attend Royal Ascot. The outfit was very similar to the one worn by Princess Diana at the same event 36 years ago. Even the earrings that the Duchess of Cambridge wore with the dress belonged to William’s mother.
What tricks do you use to wear the same garment with different outfits, so it doesn’t always look the same?
