Still, some people you meet along the way turn out to be true rare gems. Through kindness, compassion, and empathy, they can make even the most difficult days feel more manageable. According to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE, supportive interactions with coworkers can improve overall well-being and ease everyday stress.
These 10 stories remind us that positive environment matters just as much as policies from human resources.

  • No one in the office wished me a happy birthday. I thought they forgot, but then I spotted a cake with my name on it in the fridge and got excited.
    But when lunchtime finally arrived, I saw my pregnant coworker eating the cake by herself. I yelled, “What are you doing?!” She laughed and said, “I eat for two! You can just wait for your cake. They’re on the way.”
    I was so upset that I started thinking about getting Human Resources involved. But a few minutes later, the other coworkers came back carrying another cake. One of them explained everything. Since I have celiac disease, they’d ordered a gluten-free cake weeks earlier, but the bakery accidentally made a regular one. After the bakery employee realized their mistake, they called my coworkers, returned the money, and provided a gluten-free cake.
    I was so touched by their kindness. So many times I’d watched other people enjoy food while I politely declined because nobody remembered my dietary restrictions.

One of my employees was quitting. He thanked me for teaching him so much.
I said, “I really didn’t teach you much as you were in a different department.”
He said, “You taught me how to be a good boss.” It nearly made my heart explode.

  • Best manager I had by far was at a golf course I worked for. We also had a gym. If an employee signed up new members, we got a cut of the money. My manager signed up a record 28 people on my day off and put my name on the forms. When I came in, he had a big smile on his face and told me to keep an eye out for a big paycheck. I was floored!

  • Emily from Human Resources was the cheapest person alive. If five people split a pizza, she’d calculate exactly how many slices everyone ate. We laughed about it constantly.
    One day, she announced, “Lunch is on me today.” It felt suspicious. At the café Emily encouraged everyone to order dessert too. The bill finally arrived. Instead of reaching for her wallet, she suddenly covered her face and started crying.
    After a few moments she whispered, “I’m leaving.” She explained she’d accepted a transfer because her mother had recently been diagnosed with a serious illness and needed someone nearby. It was her last day at this job.
    Then our manager stood up and said he’d cover the bill. He wanted Emily to enjoy one lunch without worrying about the cost. She immediately tried to refuse, but the rest of us were so touched by our manager’s kindness and empathy that we decided to split the bill instead.

In 1997, I worked for a small family-owned business. I was called into the office by the owner, thinking I was in big trouble. He slid a blank check across the desk and told me to enroll in school. It was the start of me moving from production into administrative work, which boosted my income.

  • Back in high school, I worked at a restaurant. Our manager hauled 55+ hours a week, and during shifts, if he ever didn’t have something to do, would always find who needed the most help and get to work. I had closing work cut by an hour many times from him stepping in.
  • I’ve been dealing with constant pain for months. Every morning, the minute I arrived at my job, my manager asked how I was feeling because she noticed something was wrong. At first, I answered politely, but eventually, I snapped and told her to stop asking. I immediately apologized, but she didn’t answer.
    A few days later, I found a heating pad, a comfortable chair cushion, and a note on my desk. It said, “I’m here if you need anything.”

APPARENTLY, I HAVE A FACE THAT "SHOWS" IF I AM SICK. EVEN WHEN I DON'T KNOW IT YET. I HAD THE SWINE FLU, TWO MONTHS IN A COMA. THEY TELL ME BEFORE THAT, I DROVE MYSELF 25 MILES TO GET AN MRI OR CAT SCAN, BECAUSE I HAD HAD A COUPLE OF STROKES. HAVE NO MEMORY OF ANYTHING, FROM TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE COMA. THEY SAY I NEVER WILL REMEMBER.

  • I was six months expecting when my manager moved me to a desk closer to the restroom. She also told me I could start work later because my morning sickness had become unbearable.
    She wasn’t the type to show much empathy or compassion, so I expected others to be unhappy because of my special treatment, but they surprised me even more. One coworker started scheduling meetings later in the morning, and another offered to handle the weekly reports during my final month.

  • My first boss in high school employed my brother and me. He was a relatively dry man at the beginning, changed a lot over the time we knew him. He couldn’t offer much because business wasn’t great, but he scheduled us as much as he could.
    For my first year there, he bought us tickets to a game for our favorite hockey team as a Christmas bonus, which was my first game!
  • My manager thought the team I worked on did a great job that year, so she gave everyone an expensive gift. I was very new to the team and had only been there for a week, but she negotiated with the company to include me and also get me a gift.
