1. Apennine Colossus
It was 1568 when the Grand Duke of Tuscany bought the estate in the north of Florence, Italy. It was his gift to Bianca Cappello. A fancy villa was then built with a picturesque park, beautiful gardens, water fountains, and many statues. But only one of them withstood the test of time for over 400 years — a gigantic brick and stone sculpture called the “Apennine Colossus.”
The magnificent villa didn’t survive, but you can visit the park with the majestic statue in it. It is open to the public on weekends and holidays, just make sure you’ve booked things beforehand and enjoy the great view and new impressions.
2. The giant statue of Marilyn Monroe
Forever Marilyn is a tribute to the famous actress created by artist Seward Johnson. It captures the iconic moment in The Seven Year Itch. But now it’s a 26-foot-tall (7.9 m), 34,000-pound (15,000 kg) sculpture made of stainless steel and aluminum.
It was first spotted in the middle of Chicago, but despite its “forever” name, the sculpture has been in many different places. In 2021, it was re-established near the Palm Springs Art Museum and set to remain there for up to 3 years.
3. Icehotel
Every winter, they hand-carve massive ice blocks into Sweden’s Icehotel. And for over 3 decades now, it has been considered a must-visit landmark in Sweden for travelers from all around the globe. What’s even more interesting is when spring comes, the hotel is left to melt down and go back to nature. And the next winter, it’s built again from scratch so a new set of treasured memories can unfold before its visitors.
4. Singing Ringing Tree
This sculpture is installed in a place that was once an old British transmission station. They broke the lines down and recycled them to make a 3-meter-tall (118 in) structure that uses the energy of the wind to produce a choral sound with a range of octaves. Later, the British government chose it as one of the art pieces that became a staple of the twenty-first century British art movements.
5. Force of Nature
Italian sculptor Lorenzo Quinn created a series of sculptures that depicted Mother Nature hurtling planet Earth around in circles. It was a reminder to us all how powerful nature really can be. The sculptures have been installed all around the world. One of them is placed in London, Great Britain.
6. Les Voyageurs (The Travelers)
These enigmatic sculptures were created by Bruno Catalano. There are 10 life-size bronze sculptures altogether, and they can be found in Marseille, France. These surrealist pieces of art depict people with huge portions of their bodies missing or vice versa, materializing right before our eyes. All in all, they are dedicated to different types of travelers leaving or coming back home.
7. Spot!
Spot! is a 38-foot-tall (11.5 meters) dalmatian balancing a taxi cab on its nose. The sculpture was installed in New York near the new Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital and is supposed to greet and cheer all its visitors, especially children.
The sculptor, Donald Lipski, likes to think that the dog will make all the parents, doctors, nurses, staff, and neighbors smile every time they see this playful, heroic young dog doing the impossible. It is especially meaningful to him, as as he passes the hospital each day on his return home from the studio. Lipski is sure that art has actual healing power.
8. Dancing With Dandelions
It’s pretty hard to depict any mythical creature in any form of art. But sculptor Robin Wight has made them quite real and practical looking, like they could come to life at any moment. He used stainless steel wires for his magnificent pieces of art. And many of them really look like fragile creatures dancing against the wind.
9. Dragon’s blood trees
These funny trees that resemble giant mushrooms or umbrellas can be found on Socotra Island near Somalia. According to legend, these trees were created from the blood of a dragon that was wounded by an elephant. Anyway, due to its isolation, the island retained its natural beauty, along with its flora and fauna, leaving an impression on anyone who chooses to visit.
