How Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore Managed to Keep Their Friendship Strong for 33 Years
There’s rarely some consistency in Hollywood’s relationships. Marriages and friendships come and go, but Drew and Cameron’s sister-like bond is proof that when something is real and from the heart, it doesn’t have an expiration date.
We at Bright Side know how rare it is to find a good friend that will stick with you through thick and thin, and that’s why we decided to share this story of a great friendship with you.
Cameron and Drew met when they were both teenagers.
Diaz and Barrymore were friends way before they co-starred together. They first met in a coffee shop in Beverly Hills, where then 14-year-old Drew was serving Cameron coffee. At the time, Diaz was 16 years old and pursuing a career in modeling.
Diaz and Barrymore’s friendship blossomed even more when Drew invited Cameron to star as Natalie Cook in Charlie’s Angels, and in her words, those were one of the best years of their lives.
They talk about real things, not vanities and career.
The duo managed to sustain their friendship for so many years because they did not only have superficial conversations about movie roles or fame, but deep, meaningful ones about life. “When we would sit around and talk, it was always heartbreak, love, life, loss. It was always very important and real things, or the goofiest and silliest,” Drew revealed.
Cameron and Drew didn’t get “sucked in” with the Hollywood drama.
Having the same set of values is important to maintain a friendship, and Diaz and Barrymore are living proof. Drew revealed that she loved living next to Cameron, as they both always remembered what was important in life.
“I loved having someone that, like me, wasn’t caught up in it. We have the best time. We’ve seen each other through everything — every good and bad and high and low and life and loss and everything in between.”
They are grateful to have each other in their lives.
Despite their busy lives, Cameron and Barrymore still make time to hang out together. And when Drew celebrated her 46th birthday on The Drew Barrymore Show, Cameron surprised her with a virtual visit, and her words for the birthday girl were touching. “One of the great joys of my life is our friendship. When I think about you, literally I will cry, because I just think you’re so special and to celebrate you every year, it’s one of my favorite times of the year.”
Drew shared the same feeling for Cameron. “You’ve made me a better person my whole life. And you’ve seen me through everything. Ugly, beautiful, loss, life, birth. The fact that you love me means more than anything because you know every little thing about me. I love you!”
