Jessica Simpson Reveals She’s Been “Happy at Every Size” Despite Decades-Long Fat-Shaming
In recent years, Jessica Simpson has made headlines for how stunning she looks after her 100 lb (45 kg) weight loss. And even though she’s very happy with her body, this is yet again an example of how relentless the media has been about Simpson’s weight throughout her entire career. Now, Jessica is opening up about how she’s managed to maintain a healthy relationship with her body and how she’s having the last laugh.
She was body-shamed at every point of her career.
As a pop star, Simpson has always been under the watchful eye of the public and the media. She especially felt it in the late-2000s when the skinny trend was at the height of its influence. Specifically, in 2009, Jessica performed in Texas looking slightly bigger than most people were used to and received an onslaught of insults.
The singer revealed that she kept a diary documenting her feelings as media outlets were negatively focusing on her weight. She wrote: “Today my heart breaks because people say I’m fat. Why does the cruel opinion of this world get to me?” The experience was so hurtful that Simpson carried it with her for years and poured it all out into her memoir Open Book, in 2021.
She’s lost 100 lbs (45 kg) in recent years.
In 2012, Jessica gave birth to her first child. Unexpectedly for her, the pregnancy made her gain quite a bit of weight, to the point that she signed up for Weight Watchers, the popular weight loss program. But her second and third pregnancies (the last one was in 2019) had the same effect on her body.
Simpson even admitted that being pregnant seriously influenced her body, but she accepted that she had to give her body whatever it needed: “When you’re pregnant, I gain a lot, I mean, a lot. I didn’t expect to gain as much with my third. I thought I’d learned my lesson, but apparently, that’s just the way God made me, very hungry and pregnant.”
But after her last pregnancy, Jessica decided to take matters into her own hands and shed a staggering 100 lbs (45 kg) in 6 months. It was a triumphant moment for her, as she said: “I never thought of being in a bikini again, because I was stretched out as big as the couch. So to be able to put on a bikini... I just hadn’t thought that was even a goal until I put it on, and I was like, ’I think I was afraid of that.’”
She’s finally learned to love her body.
Today, the pop star has finally realized that she’s “been happy at every size,” adding that the only exception was the end of her pregnancies. Jessica said: “I’ve definitely embraced myself.”
She continued by saying how much she admires her body now: “I always celebrate my body. The fact that it made children is unreal... but you just don’t ever think you’re going to fit back into things. It’s crazy. A woman’s body is phenomenal in what it can do.”
Jessica is embracing everything about herself and she loves the way she looks: “For me, as a woman, to be able to look as good as I feel was a major moment. You’re proud of yourself and you deserve it... [and you’re] understanding yourself and feeling good on the outside. When those 2 things click, the sky’s the limit.”
