64-year-old Madonna has been occupying numerous headlines after she made a rare public appearance at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. The singer’s incredibly youthful face ruffled a few feathers and, once again, raised the topic of aging in Hollywood. One of the big stars contributing to the conversation is Keira Knightley, who stood up for Madonna and offered her perspective on the issue.

But Madonna is not one to go down without a fight, so she took to Instagram to put everyone back into place: “Once again, I am caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny that permeates the world we live in. A world that refuses to celebrate women past the age of 45 and feels the need to punish her if she continues to be strong-willed, hard-working, and adventurous.”

The musical diva then continued, saying that no amount of opinions will change the way she lives her life: “I have never apologized for any of the creative choices I have made nor the way that I look or dress, and I’m not going to start.”

She pointed out that whether you get surgeries or not, you’re always a target: “You’ve got Madonna on the one hand — and we’re told that’s not the right thing. Then you have someone else, where we’re told, ’They looked better 20 years ago.’ How are we, culturally, meant to age?”

Keira, who’s turning 38 this year, also added that the topic of aging is always relevant within her group of friends: “A lot of the conversations I’ll have with my girlfriends are, ’Oh my God, I’ve got a line [wrinkle]. Oh, God!’ Change is always tricky. We’re taught that it’s bad. We’re taught we don’t want gray hair.”
