Rest in peace Natasha Richardson
Liam Neeson Had to Decide Whether to Keep His Wife Alive; Here Are His Final Words to Her
“Hey, I had a tumble in the snow,” and from those words, Liam Neeson’s life took a complete and irreversible turn. Since his wife’s passing, he decided to embrace the single life and raise his kids on his own. But those last moments with her weren’t easy at all as the actor had to make a tough call.
The accident that changed his life
Liam Neeson and his late wife, Natasha Richardson, were like a match made in heaven. They met and fell in love while working together, and it was love at first sight. Everything seemed perfect, but life had different plans for them.
During a vacation in Quebec, Canada, tragedy struck when Natasha had a terrible skiing accident that caused a traumatic brain injury. It was a devastating turn of events that changed their lives forever. Without delay, she reached out to her husband to warn him, saying, “Darling, I’ve taken a tumble in the snow.”
Despite the severity of the situation, Richardson initially downplayed her need for medical attention, possibly hoping it was just a minor incident.
However, the fall had a much worse impact than she thought and three hours later, they rushed her to the hospital. The outcome was a fatal brain injury, and unfortunately, there were very few things that could be done to help her.
It was an incredibly heart-wrenching moment for Liam when he got the news about Natasha’s condition at the hospital. He hurried to her side, full of hope and anxiety, but sadly, he had to face the devastating truth that she was brain-dead.
He stayed true to the promise they made to each other.
Even though the odds of her making it were low, Neeson kept telling Natasha he’d take her back home so her friends and family could say their goodbyes.
Natasha’s last wish was something they both agreed on before. They had a pact that if either of them ended up in a vegetative state, the other would “pull the plug” instead of letting them suffer.
He recalls his last words, “I was told she was brain-dead. But obviously, she was on life support and stuff. There was nothing to do but say goodbye then. And I went to her and told her I loved her. Said, ’Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this. You’ve banged your head. I don’t know if you can hear me, but that’s — this is what’s gone down.’”
It was the hardest thing he ever had to do, but he did it to grant her wish. But Liam did more than just fulfill their promise; he donated Richardson’s heart, kidney, and liver, knowing it would make her happy to keep other people alive.
Neeson was completely crushed by the sudden loss of his wife, and that wound is still fresh even now. But he holds onto her memory dearly, never letting a day pass without cherishing it. “I mourn for her, I visit her grave on a very regular basis.”
Liam Neeson’s story may truly strike the heart of even the most hardened person; he stayed committed to his wife’s memory while embracing the life of a single father to never let his children feel alone.
