My people, and Arabs in general don't change last name. Most of them even don't even officially carry their fathers' last names. We go given_name father's_name grandfather's_name ... . But I know the last name change in European culture is about joining families, not ownership of the wife. Well, not in the last two centuries. And I don't understand why the need for the protectiveness and defensiveness in many of the statements in this post.
