Longtime Hollywood heartthrob Leonardo Dicaprio isn’t just a star known for his roles in movies. He has also greatly contributed to the well-being of not only people but also our planet.

Although he’s won 101 awards, that is not his main focus when making movies, and he rather enjoys every step of the process. “Every single time you just go in there trying to bat a thousand, trying to give it your all,” he says. He is not only a passionate actor but a passionate activist as well, proving that even the most famous people can be very down to Earth, literally.

We at Bright Side collected some impressive facts about Leo that left us feeling tender and even more misty-eyed about him.

1. He prefers to date women who are younger than 25.

In the past years, Leonardo dated many beautiful women, and all of them were in their early twenties. The only woman who was close to his age gap was model Gisele up until 2005. After that, he was in a relationship with Bar Refaeli when she was 20, and then moved on to Blake Lively who was 23 years old at the time.

Although Leo didn’t open up about his relationship preferences, he believes that it’s hard to predict marriage. “That time will come when that time comes. The truth is, you can’t predict marriage. You can’t plan it. It’s just going to happen when it happens.”

2. He jumped in a frozen lake to save his 2 dogs.

Leonardo has 2 huskies named Jack and Jill, who he saved from drowning. While filming the Netflix movie, Don’t Look Up, Leonardo’s dogs came to visit him on set. During an interview, he claimed that he saw one of his dogs jump in a frozen lake and he followed right after to save him. As soon as he rescued one dog, the other one started licking its animal companion, and they all ended up in the lake.

3. Leo saved a man who fell overboard on a cruise.

Leonardo was on a boat with his friends in the Caribbean when a man fell off the ship. The odds of the man staying alive weren’t high, but thanks to Leo and the crew members, he survived. After they rescued him, he was given food, water, and clothes before being passed to the lifeguards.

4. He was part of “Leo Mania.”

When Titanic was released, many fans would label this era as “Leo Mania,” when Leonardo was seen everywhere — in magazines, school lockers, movie theatres, and most likely in some people’s dreams. “It was a very surreal period. It was bizarre. I took a break for a couple of years because it was so intense. I needed to recharge and refocus.”

His pictures were taken by famous photographers, such as Lawrence Schwartzwald, and the most recent picture he took was of Leo riding a Citi Bike.

5. He’s an environmentalist and enjoys donating to a good cause.

Back in 1998, Leonardo Dicaprio created a foundation to “support organizations and initiatives dedicated to securing a sustainable future for our planet.” He has a passion for climate change and our environment and even made a documentary called The 11th Hour. His goal was to spread public awareness and come up with solutions to save our planet along with 50 environmental issue experts.

6. He gets emotionally engaged in movies.

Leonardo doesn’t believe in doing something just for the sake of it when it comes to a specific genre, subject matter, or what it means historically. He reads a script, says, “Woah, I’m emotionally engaged in this,” and performs accordingly. He believes that popular culture and subject matter will pass in time, so in order for a movie to turn out good, his heart needs to be connected to the script.

What else do you think makes Leonardo Dicaprio one of a kind?
