At this year’s Grammy Awards, Kim Petras and Sam Smith won the best pop duo/group performance award for their song Unholy. Petras is the first transgender woman to win this honor, and this wasn’t just a victory for talented musicians, but also a triumph for the LGBTQ+ community.

In celebration of Petras making history with this win, Smith let her accept the trophy and give a speech.

During her heartfelt speech, Petras expressed gratitude to both pop music icon and LGBTQ+ advocate Madonna and paid homage to the late, inspiring artist SOPHIE.

“I’m the first transgender woman to win this award,” Kim began. “I want to thank all the incredible transgender legends before me who kicked these doors open. SOPHIE especially, my friend who told me this would happen and always believed in me. Thank you so much for your inspiration, SOPHIE. I adore you and your inspiration will always be in my music.”

Kim took a moment to express her love and gratitude for her mother, who supported her from the beginning.

“I grew up next to a highway in nowhere Germany and my mother believed me that I was a girl and I wouldn’t be here without her and her support,” the singer opened up.

She also expressed her gratitude to the Recording Academy and thanked everyone who made the song a success, including Sam Smith, who she referred to as a “true angel and hero” in her life.

Petras also took the time to reflect on what this achievement meant to her.

During a press room interview, she shared her thoughts on overcoming societal expectations and the power of music to bring people together. “All these years are going through my head of people saying I’d be a niche artist because I’m transgender, and my music would only ever play in gay clubs — and what’s wrong with that, because I love gay clubs — but now I got a Grammy for making gay club music with my friend,” Kim revealed. “It’s the best feeling in the world.”

Kim and Sam Smith brought their hit song “Unholy” to life in an all-red moment on the red carpet.

Smith was dressed in a floor-length red gown complete with matching gloves, a top hat, and a glitzy cane. Petras, on the other hand, flaunted her edgy side in a shorter red dress. A sheer red veil flowed from her platinum blonde hair, while a striking blood-red pendant hung around her neck, adding to the group’s gothic-inspired vibe.
