10 Times Celebrities Attended Royal Weddings and Broke Traditions

Royal weddings are of the utmost importance when it comes to celebrity appearances. Elegance is at the center. Though some traditions are established for these weddings, some celebrities choose to wear over-the-top headpieces or bend gender norms.

We at Bright Side had a hoot learning about royal wedding traditions, while learning what not to do from these celebrities.

1. David Beckham

David broke royal tradition by wearing his OBE (Order of the British Empire) medal on the wrong side at the 2011 royal wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Moreover, usually, guests who are invited to royal weddings are expected to wear clothes manufactured in the country, a rule which Beckham broke by wearing a Saint Laurent suit.

2. Cara Delevingne

Cara wore a tailcoat suit and a top hat at the wedding of Princess Eugenie in 2018. Though it seems like she got the confirmation of the bride herself beforehand, saying, “Eugenie has been a friend of mine since I was a kid and I’ve always wanted to wear tails... I texted her, as I wasn’t sure about it and she was like: ’Of course, I expected nothing less from you!’”

Still, this was an outfit that broke royal norms.

3. Liv Tyler

It is a pretty well-known fact that guests at a royal wedding should not wear all black clothes. But it seems like Liv Tyler was not informed about this dress code, turning up to the wedding of Princess Eugenie wearing dark clothes.

4. Robbie Williams

The well-known singer did something which is very looked-down-upon in the world of royal weddings, that is, he chewed gum. The paparazzi were quick to immortalize that moment, giving everyone a lesson on what not to do at a wedding of this status.

5. Patrick J. Adams and Troian Bellisario

Taking selfies seems like a fairly harmless thing to do at a wedding. Not at a royal wedding, though: “Guests will be told not to take pictures of any [part] of the day,” explained Duncan Larcombe, former Royal Editor of The Sun. Adding to that, Troian wore open-toed shoes, which are considered too informal for this kind of setting.

6. Pippa Middleton

Royal bridesmaids are expected to wear white, or something close to that, however, Pippa’s dress was a little too bridal, taking away from her sister’s moment. Moreover, she was named maid of honor, which goes against tradition. Most royal brides do not have adult bridesmaids.

7. Prince William

Prince William chose his brother, Prince Harry, as his best man. Traditionally, there’s no such thing as a best man in a royal wedding, but a so-called “supporter.” The brothers did not seem to care about that, and had the time of their lives.

8. Prince Harry

Prince Harry did the same, picking his brother William as his best man. It seems like the brothers have come up with a tradition of their own, being each other’s best man at their wedding.

9. Princess Beatrice

Princess Beatrice had all eyes on her at the 2011 royal wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Though this should not be the case, as no one is allowed to wear anything that could draw attention away from the bride. This is a huge no in the world of royal weddings.

10. Carey Mulligan

Traditionally, women are expected to wear hats or something of that kind, to a royal wedding. Carey did not go for the normal royal look, but instead opted for a feather clip in her hair.
