you’re not overreacting homeowners shouldn’t have to deal with someone else’s dog turning their yard into a bathroom. If they can’t control their pet, that’s on them
My Neighbor’s Dog Poops in My Yard, but Things Escalated Faster Than I Expected

Dealing with noisy neighbors, unruly pets, and constant rule-breaking can be exhausting and stressful. Many homeowners struggle with maintaining boundaries, protecting their property, and finding peace at home while managing difficult neighbors and chaotic living situations.
Letter for Bright Side:
Hey, Bright Side,
Okay, I need to vent because I’m losing my mind a little. My neighbors, I swear, they ignore every single rule. Parties until 2am like it’s a frat house, leaving my gates open so their dog can come poop in my yard.
I tried being chill; I warned them, then I started locking my gates. Thought that would be the end of it, nope. I came home to dirty paw prints and poop everywhere. I picked up the mess and went to their yard.
I marched over to their door, ready to unleash my inner Hulk. But then, I froze. The place looked like a tornado hit it. Personal belongings everywhere, dirty dishes piled up like a science experiment.
I swear these college kids have completely lost their minds. Living like this, in a regular neighborhood, is insane.
So yeah, I reported them to our neighborhood association. They said they’ll “take action,” maybe talk to the owner, maybe terminate the lease, or something. Honestly, I don’t know if they’ll do anything.
Part of me feels like I’m being a total Karen. Like, after work I just want to relax, not police their wild, chaotic lifestyle. But also, it’s my yard, my sleep, my peace of mind. I can’t keep up with this every single night.
Bright Side, am I overreacting here? Or is it totally reasonable to want your own home to not feel like a frat house?
Best,
Lilia

You are entitled to the peaceful enjoyment of your home. Loud late parties = time to call the police. Contacting HOA was wise. A junk filled yard will reflect on the entire neighborhood and lower property values. Hopefully their lease can be terminated early for cause.
Well it is your home and you should be able to live in peace not always worried about what your neighbors are gonna do next. What's yours is yours and you shouldn't have to explain that. I'd make sure they knew if it didn't stop you'd start filing no trespassing charges no exceptions. It's a shame when you can't live in peace in your own home.
.
idk reporting was smart or childish...
Some people are going to call this petty and say you should’ve talked to them again before reporting them. But locking your gate and reporting to the HOA was a reasonable next step after warnings didn’t work
Do they smoke wacky bacy?
And what does that have to do with a dog's pooping in her yard? Just curious
Young adults/ grown ass kids, dont respect anything or anyone.
Im sure you remember those days, maybe go have a sit down talk with them ,maybe bring a 6 pack of beers with you and try to talk like adults with them and explain your situation and how you feel about the whole situation
You work hard to have peace and tranquility at the end of the day. These young bucks need to learn respect…
Lock your gates and get cameras then call the cops and get them trespassed.
An agent of the property has to tell them to leave. To legally bar someone from your property, clearly communicate the ban in person (ideally with a witness) or via certified mail, and notify local police to create a record. Display "No Trespassing" signs and install security cameras for evidence. If they return, they are trespassing, which can lead to criminal charges.
Could also get them for having their dog off of a leash most towns and cities have leash laws so if your cameras picture the dog doing their business in your yard there is another charge against the owners
Thanks so much for sharing your story with us, Lilia!
- Boundaries aren’t mean, they’re survival — Look, locking your gates or setting rules isn’t being a Karen, it’s literally protecting your sanity. You don’t owe anyone access to your yard, your time, or your sleep. Treat it like insurance: annoying now, but life-saving later.
- Neutralize the “Karen” guilt — Feeling bad for calling the association? Totally normal. But imagine if someone did this to your best friend; would you tell them to suck it up or back them up? You’re not “overreacting,” you’re just human.
- Protect your chill time — After work, you don’t need to police their chaos. Schedule your own rituals, music, tea, and walks, and do things that remind you the world isn’t always a disaster zone. It makes the annoying stuff more manageable.
Even in the most chaotic situations, setting boundaries and seeking support can help restore peace and control. With patience and the right strategies, it’s possible to reclaim your space and feel at ease in your own home again.

You reported them and now they might lose their lease? That’s harsh for a dog problem. Neighbors should try more peaceful solutions first before involving associations.
well grow a thicker skin because occasional dog poop happens in neighborhoods
Put a lock on the gate??
It wasn't just the dog pooping in OP's yard; it was also the loud partying that went on until two in the morning. I'm sure that there's a noise ordinance in that community, which the neighbors are in violation of. OP tried warning them, then locking the gate to keep the dog out, but they unlocked the gate and let the dog do its thing. The noise ordinance is worth reporting on, so the neighbors can be evicted for that reason.
The ones defending the neighbors are the ones just like them. The ones who take advantage of everyone, then wonder why everyone is complaining about them.
