There are around 450,000 plant species out there, while 35,000 to 70,000 of them are used specifically for medicine globally. Because of that, it can be hard to pick the one you want to grow indoors — especially with all the benefits certain plants can have.

With that in mind, Bright Side has done some research on 7 popular plants known for their health benefits that you might want to start growing yourself.

1. Ginkgo biloba

One of the oldest living tree species, ginkgo biloba is also one of the most used herbs in Chinese medicine. Ginkgo’s health benefits are believed to come from its high antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show it can be helpful for mild dementia, fatigue, and might also influence bone healing.

2. Chamomile

Even though it’s most commonly found in teas, chamomile has been used for thousands of years and there are several studies showing benefits for certain issues, such as sleep quality, blood sugar levels, and even thyroid cancer.

3. Echinacea

Also known as purple coneflower — echinacea is rich in boosting antioxidants and known for its beneficial effects on our immune system, therefore, it can be helpful with fighting viruses and infections and helping us recover faster. Moreover, it may also relieve anxiety.

4. Feverfew

While this flower looks visually similar to chamomile, its benefits are quite different. Traditionally, feverfew was used to treat fevers (hence its name), but as of now, studies suggest that it has pain-relieving and anti-cancer properties.

5. Ginger

You’ve likely used ginger in the kitchen before, as it adds a lot of flavor to different dishes — but it also has many benefits to our health. It can aid with weight loss and nausea caused by pregnancy, and it also seems to be equally effective as the medication, Novafen, when taken orally to relieve menstrual pain.

6. Rosemary

Like ginger, rosemary has been used in the culinary world for a long time, and it also has a lot of benefits to our health. This herb is a great source of antioxidants that can boost our immune system, and it’s also been shown to relieve depression and anxiety and improve memory as well.

7. Aloe

Aloe vera is a super popular plant that’s been used for thousands of years. Several studies show it can be beneficial when applied topically to treat burns (including sunburns), soothe skin redness, and calm irritation related to acne.
