10 Simple Habits That Can Prolong Your Life
Scientists at Stanford University have conducted a study that revealed some secrets that can help us live up to 95 years. Several results of other studies let us take a closer look at everyday things from a different angle — like your shoes, for example. It turns out that these things can have a significant impact on your life expectancy.
Bright Side has found 10 surprising things that can really prolong our lives. All these rules are simple, yet effective.
10. Visit one and the same doctor.
Scientists at the University of Exeter have proven that if you visit the same doctor for years, you actually prolong your life.
This rule applies not only to a general practitioner, but to a surgeon, a psychiatrist, and other doctors. Doctors can remember their patients’ features and notice if something changes. If you turn to a new doctor, they have to uncover your problems starting at the very beginning.
9. Plan your own budget and save some money for the future.
Financial experts like to draw parallels between financial and physical health. The group of American researchers has found out that people older than 50 who experienced a negative wealth shock had a significantly increased risk of mortality.
First, stress itself doesn’t contribute to good health. Second, when people lose money, they lose an opportunity to take care of their health and visit good doctors. So experts recommend starting to get prepared for your retirement 10 years before you leave your job. You should also be emotionally prepared to handle financial losses.
8. Eat more fats.
According to research presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention, people who consume monounsaturated fats such as olive, avocado, seeds, and other oils reduce the risk of death caused by cardiovascular issues by 16%.
If you also add some animal fats such as dairy products, eggs, chicken, red meat, and fish to your diet, you’ll reduce the risk of death by approximately 25%.
7. Watch your intestine and gut work.
According to studies conducted by scientists at McGill University, the secret to longevity is all in the gut. Useful bacteria living in it prolong our lives.
Probiotics have a good influence on the absorption of products that we eat and help us absorb more useful substances. It’s important since scientists have already proven that our gut is connected with our brain, and it’s the “mess” in the head that causes gastrointestinal tract diseases.
6. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
Things that bring us joy and comfort indirectly prolong our lives. David Rosenbaum, a 69-year-old Ph.D., claims that one of the reasons why he managed to survive this long is because he wears comfortable shoes.
Shoes help us control our activity: wearing comfy footwear, we walk about 10,000 steps a day, which is significant for our health.
5. Don’t lie on the couch.
You can prolong your life if you reduce the amount of time you spend sitting in the office or lying on the couch in front of the TV. It’s not recommended to sit more than 2 hours or to spend more than 2 hours in front of the TV a day.
If you follow these rules, you’ll extend your life by approximately 3 years.
4. Sleep longer on weekends.
Now you can stop blaming yourself for sleeping in on the weekends! Based on the studies of Torbjörn Akerstedt, a scientist from Sweden, sleeping in on the weekend can save us from health issues and even reduce the risk of early death.
3. Clean your house regularly.
30 minutes of physical activity a day and 5 times a week reduce the risk of death caused by cardiovascular diseases.
This theory was proven by Scott Lear and his colleagues from McMaster University. In addition to this, you don’t even have to go to the gym. You should only spend some time on household chores like washing the floor or vacuuming. These activities do help us. If you have time to walk to and from your work, you contribute even more to your health.
2. Work a lot.
Harvard scientists are sure that people who set goals and do everything to achieve their aims have the brightest lives.
Thus, those who waste their youth and don’t try to build their careers are likely to pass away earlier than their successful colleagues. Life always changes and those things you used to dream about at age 20 aren’t that interesting at age 30 and look ridiculous at 40.
So it’s really important not to be lazy: set goals even if they’re only significant for you! Achieve these goals and set new ones.
1. Talk more to people who understand you.
People who have supportive and reliable friends and relatives live longer.
It doesn’t matter whether you have lots of friends or just one best friend who understands you. It’s not about the quantity but the quality.
You can build an incredible career and earn huge sums of money, but if you don’t have anyone by your side, your life can’t be 100% happy. Meanwhile, happy people live longer than unhappy ones.
Bonus: Epsom salt bathing is a bridge to a stronger health system.
If you want to get rid of harmful toxins in your body, you should give this method a chance. You’ll only need some Epsom salt and a bathtub. Epsom salt is chemically known as magnesium sulfate and is an easy and inexpensive source of magnesium. It’s highly recommended to people suffering from muscle pain, mycosis, sprains, bruises, and inflammation.
Add a cup of Epsom salt to a warm bath and soak for 20-30 minutes. You can also add a drop or 2 of lavender essential oil which adds a lovely scent and helps induce relaxation.
