12 Costume Mistakes That Prove Even the Most Talented Stylists Can Miss Something

Despite the fact that movies usually have on their production team several specialists who are in charge of the image of their characters, they can also make some mistakes in their work. As a result, we can find some inconsistencies related to makeup, hair, or costumes worn by the actors and actresses.

That’s why we at Bright Side decided to create a list of some movie mistakes.

1. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

In the film, Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, wears her hair in 2 short, curly braids, the length of which changes throughout the film.

2. Top Gun (1986)

Apparently, the scene where Maverick and Charlie meet in an elevator after their training was filmed later, as Kelly McGillis’ hair appears to have been dyed a different shade. Although she tries to hide it with a hat, it looks darker on her. This could be considered a continuity error in the film’s story.

3. Clueless (1995)

In the 1995 film, we can also see some mistakes, like the fact that Amber’s hair grows longer and shorter throughout the film. In some scenes, we see her with long hair, while in others, it only reaches her shoulders.

4. Pretty Woman (1990)

During the night when the protagonists go to the opera, Vivian’s hairstyle changes from the moment she is given the necklace to the end of the night. We can notice it especially in the strands of hair that come out of it and frame her face.

5. A Knight’s Tale (2001)

Although most of the costumes worn by men are historically accurate, the same cannot be said of Jocelyn’s, whose dresses and hairstyles have a clear contemporary influence. Women in the 14th century used to wear tighter dresses accompanied by a kind of belt at the hips.

6. Braveheart (1995)

This film recounts events that took place at the end of the 13th century. At first glance, the costumes worn by the nobles in this production were made according to historical research. However, the costumes worn by other groups of people do not go along with the reality of the time, as belted kilts were not worn until the 18th century.

7. Enola Holmes (2020)

The plot of the film takes place in Great Britain at the end of the 19th century, when the hairstyle worn by women of the time consisted of having their hair tied back with some loose curls at the sides, outlining their faces. However, the fact that the protagonist is generally shown with a half-updo did not prevent the film from being well-received.

8. The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

Throughout the film we see the protagonists wearing lush dresses with cleavage. However, in the 16th century, the time in which the story takes place, this could not have happened, as women had to wear a kind of undershirt under their dresses.

9. The Last Samurai (2003)

Unlike the way Tom Cruise appears in this film, men in the 19th century did not usually wear their hair so long. There were around 36 different hairstyles that barbers could cut, but none of them included long hair. Their styles varied and they could include mustaches or beards, which started being very fashionable once again from the mid-1800s onward.

10. Marie Antoinette (2006)

Although it could be considered something done on purpose, in one of the scenes of the movie we can see a pair of Converse tennis shoes, specifically in the sequence where different shoes are shown. This was to show that, despite everything, Marie Antoinette was still a teenager trying to find her place in the world.

11. Cleopatra (1963)

During the filming of the movie, due to bad weather, actress Elizabeth Taylor suffered from pneumonia that became complicated, to the point of having to undergo an emergency tracheotomy that saved her life. This procedure left a noticeable scar on her neck that is visible in some scenes of the film, creating a historical anachronism.

12. Brave (2012)

Based on Queen Elinor’s hairstyle (2 knee-length braids, tied with ribbons), this film appears to be set around the 12th century. With that in mind, Merida’s intention to wear her hair long and loose would be appropriate for an unmarried woman. Therefore, her mother’s desire to continually fix her hair would make no sense.

What do you think about these types of mistakes in movies or series? What else have you noticed that does not appear in this list?
