8 Movie Mistakes You Can’t Unsee

There are a lot of things that make the movies we love so great, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have their fair share of mistakes, whether it’s an actor flubbing a line or the shadow of a camera hovering over a scene. As perfection is unattainable, even the most careful filmmakers can miss something during production. So buckle up because we’ve compiled a list of 10 movie mistakes you may not have noticed — but once you do, you’ll never forget.

1. The eye color of Legolas in The Lord of the Rings

In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the Elven prince, Legolas, has blue eyes. However, you’ll notice that in some scenes during The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, especially battle scenes, his eyes change colors to purple and brown.

He couldn’t wear contact lenses every day because they scratched his corneas. In some scenes, the production team digitally changed his eye color.

In the film, there is a shelf of books that appears in one scene. One of the books there is Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, a magical historical fiction published in 2004. The small, unaddressed mistake here is that The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was set in the 1980s.

In the movie, Evelyn is holding a piece of paper with instructions written on it. A peculiar detail in the note is that the verb “breathe” is misspelled. Later, when she re-opens the note, the word is written correctly.

4. The book in Unforgiven

In the movie, there is a brief moment that reveals a mistake. Gene Hackman tries to read a book, but the camera catches a glimpse of what he’s really reading: his script for the scene.

When Austin Butler says, “Course I have,” his mouth doesn’t move because the voice is dubbed over.

6. The Macarena dance in Richard Jewell

The movie takes place in 1996. However, the man doing the Macarena on stage is wearing an Apple Watch.

7. The handles in The Little Mermaid

When Carlotta brings the plates for their meal, each has a silver handle. But when Sebastian runs across, one of those silver handles changes to gold.

In one scene, Dahmer comes home from basic training in 1979 with a National Defense Service Medal that wasn’t awarded between 1974 and 1990.

What is a movie that’s so well-made it has zero mistakes? If you could add a movie mistake to the list, what would it be?
