13 Stories About Mothers-in-Law Who Can Make a Movie Plot Out of an Ordinary Day

Since we can’t choose our family, we often have to deal with their quirks. And sometimes it seems that the mothers of our significant others occupy a special place in our heart. They can always amaze us with their behavior, both strange or suddenly positive.

  • My mother-in-law used to bring my son all sorts of cheap chocolates and wafers. We told her that the child was already allergic to sweets — to no avail.
I encouraged my son to tell his grandmother next time, “Grandma, you’d better bring something healthy!” She smiled, and the next time she came, she proudly declared, “Look, grandson, I brought you something healthy — a pack of sausages!” © Caramel / VK
  • My husband has 2 brothers and was the first to marry. This union resulted in the birth of 2 daughters. It would seem that the mother-in-law should have been happy to have granddaughters. After all, there are only men in the house. But no, she didn’t show much joy.
When the middle brother also got married and had a son, the mother-in-law literally doted on her grandson, but still ignored granddaughters. Moreover, she constantly told my husband that he had no heir, although the girls are the spitting image of him. I think she just doesn’t like me. © Mamdarinka / VK
  • My mother-in-law brought over her 4 cats into our pet free home for a month, and put the litter boxes in our pantry next to our bedroom (6 feet away) while I was 14 weeks pregnant. All this had been discussed beforehand, and she disregarded all her promises (cats blocked off to a certain part of house, cats only staying 3 days. All turned out to be lies.)
By the grace of God, seriously, my husband magically developed the most severe cat allergy that month, when he lived with cats all his life for years. Mother-in-law had to cave, and we will never have the cats over again only because of that allergy. © Over_Worldliness6079 / Reddit
  • I love to cook. I spoil my family with all sorts of delicacies, savories and baked goods. Sometimes I cook something simple, but I add some spices to make it tastier.
But my mother-in-law has been coming to us for 10 years, bringing bags with food: boiled chicken, cutlets, bread, sausage, salad with mayonnaise, noodle soup, cooked pasta in a bag. To this day, no one has ever understood why she does it. © Overheard / Ideer
  • My husband recently started telling me that I’ve been neglecting myself. We have 3 kids, by the way! And I take care of myself. My mother-in-law came to visit, and my husband thought he’d find an ally in her. He says to her jokingly, “Mom, my wife doesn’t look well-groomed, don’t you think?”
The mother-in-law squinted and said, “Not well-groomed? And who is grooming her? Where is the attention, where are the flowers, or did you pay for her visits to beauty salons? Have you even once cooked something so that she could rest? Have you even once done the dishes? With demands like this, you’re risking staying alone.”
It was the first time I saw his face like that. He almost cried. My mother-in-law turned out to be a golden woman. She has lived her life, she knows what to say and when to push. © Mamdarinka / VK
  • When I gave birth to my first child, my mother-in-law disliked me. To her, I was a con artist who had taken her son away from her. Every move I made was criticized, every day was a challenge. My husband tried to defend me, but it only made her angrier.
It’s been 12 years. My husband and I already have 3 children, a strong family, and her second son has divorced twice. Suddenly, I’ve become her “best daughter-in-law,” “an example for others” and “a real support for the family.”
The nasty things she used to say about me seem to have been erased from her memory. Sometimes she even tells others how good I am and how lucky her son is to have me, and I just smile. © Mamdarinka / VK
  • My mother-in-law got all her grandkids Christmas presents except mine. After she found out we were expecting our second child, she told us that all the grandkids were only getting money added to their accounts, and they weren’t doing presents for Christmas or birthdays... • I was away for a week. I came back, and the house was as clean as the day I left. My husband was fine, the dogs were fine. And then I went to take a shower, pulled the curtain aside and saw the tiles with cats on the wall! It all started to make sense.
My mother-in-law came round. She had been saying for a long time that our tiles were awful, so she replaced them with her beloved cats. They’re everywhere in her flat: on cups, plates, walls, rugs, clothes. Time to replace the locks. © Mamdarinka / VK
  • How squeamish can a person be? Here’s my mother-in-law coming to our house with her own dishes and her own towels. She almost never eats anything that I cook, she eats mostly bought food.
There was a time when she came with her own bed linen. Many people complain that their mothers-in-law nag them, but I can’t say anything like this about mine. She doesn’t nag. She just acts this way.
I would understand if my place was dirty, but everything shines, unlike her house. I don’t get it. © Overheard / Ideer
  • My mother-in-law is pretty awesome to me. She accepted me right away, even though I’m 13 years older than my husband. She is very caring, tries hard not to overstep any boundaries, and doesn’t get into our business too much. She even came over and painted both of my porches for my daughter’s graduation party because I didn’t have the time to do it. © StinkieBritches / Reddit
  • We once left our daughter at my mother-in-law’s for the weekend because my husband and I needed to go out of town. We picked her up on Monday, the daughter was happy, the mother-in-law was happy too.
But for some reason, the child was returned to us in the completely different clothes. Instead of new overalls, she was wearing some old windbreaker with a hole in the back, some old trousers and a strange hat.
Long story short, they were at the playground and the mother-in-law saw some old acquaintance. Then she brought her to her place and gave her our kid’s stuff because they needed it more. And she didn’t see anything strange in it. © Mamdarinka / VK
  • My husband is a sailor. The main purpose of my mother-in-law’s life is to catch me with another man while he is on a voyage. She follows me from time to time, makes surprise visits, etc. And then someone informed her I wasn’t alone at home.
She breaks into the flat, runs into the bedroom and finds her son in there. He came back earlier without telling her so that he could be with me without the annoying visits of his mum, who stays with us practically around the clock. © Overheard / Ideer
  • My mother-in-law and I are both mega nerds, and she has the same twisted sense of humor I do. I am 37 weeks pregnant, and she helped throw a baby shower for us. Not only was everything perfect, but she surprised me with a Harry Potter themed cake. © cookiesformoose / Reddit
