Many of us dream of a good night’s rest and a beautiful morning without the sound of an alarm. It seems like all we need is sleep, and life will instantly get better once we sleep as much as we want. However, sleeping can actually turn from our friend to foe if we indulge in it without any limits.

Bright Side explains why sleeping too much has a lot of side effects, so you might want to reconsider doing so.

1. You might feel exhausted all the time.

Oddly enough, getting a lot of sleep won’t make you feel refreshed and energized. On the contrary, you will experience fatigue and an unwillingness to do anything. The recommended amount of sleep is between 7-9 hours for adults. If you sleep more than that, your brain feels foggy, leaving you unable to focus.

2. You might be prone to headaches.

This is a common sign of oversleeping, which is caused by misfiring neurotransmitters. Too much sleep usually brings about tension-type headaches. What’s more, if you snore, you’re more likely to wake up with a headache. A survey showed that 60% of snorers are prone to them.

3. Your chronic conditions might deteriorate.

Pretty often, sleeping too much exacerbates chronic depression and other conditions, such as back pain. Additionally, if you tend to gasp for air during the night (also known as sleep apnea), you might stay in bed longer because of poor sleep quality. As a consequence, heart conditions can worsen.

4. You might feel easily irritable.

Instead of feeling happy and full of energy, you are more likely to wake up grumpy and moody. Waking up feeling already tired and realizing that you can’t be as productive as you’d like spoils your mood and makes you more irritable and angry.

5. You might age prematurely.

Not only does your face age faster, but also your brain. It’s estimated that the latter can age by 2 years. Sleeping too much causes memory and concentration problems. In addition, oversleeping slows down metabolism and causes weight gain.

As it’s known, the older we are, the slower our metabolism gets.
