13 Fashion Trends That Are Coming Back, While We Say, “Please Don’t”

Fashion is really cyclical. After they’ve been forgotten for several decades, some trends start to make their way back into the spotlight. Now, the trends of the ’90s and the beginning of the 2000s are returning. We were happy about sneakers, oversized clothing, and leather pants, but some trends really confused us.

We at Bright Side love being trendy, but these 13 fashion trends are not really what we were looking for.

1. “Beef” lips

The name of this trend is not attractive at all and the makeup is pretty controversial too. Do you remember the women from the ’90s that outlined their lips with a dark-brown pencil and painted the inside pink? This is what “beef” lips are. They were named this way because they look like a medium-rare steak. And yes, they are trendy again.

2. Mullet haircut

This is probably the most popular haircut of the past 50 years, and both men and women have had it. The first wave of popularity was in the ’70s when mullet was seen on stars like Paul McCartney and David Bowie. In the ’80s and the ’90s, the cut was still popular. And now, after a short break, it’s popular among celebrities and regular people again.

3. Square-toed shoes

Square-toed shoes made their way back to the wardrobes of women at the end of 2019. And they are still very popular.

4. Buttoned-up cardigans with nothing underneath

All girls from the ’90s wore short buttoned-up cardigans. And we wore them on top of T-shirts and dresses. Those who were bolder wore them without T-shirts, with the top or bottom buttons open. It seems that now it’s time to buy these cardigans again, because almost all of the modern trendsetters are wearing them.

5. Double bun hairstyles

This hairstyle for children was popular among adult girls in the ’90s and the 2000s. And now, almost 20 years later, this trend is returning. For example, Jennifer Lopez recently posted a photo where she combined 2 trends — double buns and baby hairs.

6. Visible bras

Transparent blouses and other clothes that reveal the bra are popular again. Also, it’s important for the bra to be bright and attractive: it’s part of the look now.

7. Straight locks that frame the face

When we were in school, many girls had ponytails with straight locks that framed their faces. The luckiest girls, that could convince their parents, even lightened these face-framing locks. And now that we’ve basically forgotten about this trend, it’s back.

8. Hawaiian shirts

Clothes with bright patterns were very popular in the ’50s-’60s and Elvis Presley was a huge influence. Later, in the ’90s, everyone probably had a shirt like this. If you still have one of these, you can wear it today.

9. Sandals with long laces

We’re pretty sure that you probably had sandals that took half an hour to put on. Now, they are trendy again. Would you take the risk and buy them today?

10. Massive chains on the neck

Chains have been worn for several centuries, but if we are talking about modern history, massive chains became popular in the ’60s and ’70s. This was the time of a huge fashion revolution and when punk culture appeared. The iconic figure of this movement, Sid Vicious, wore a massive chain around his neck. You can see accessories like this today on modern celebrities.

11. Crimped hair

Crimped hair was the dream of all girls at the end of the ’90s and the start of the 2000s. And now this hair is back in trend. Today, they style it a bit differently by adding more volume.

12. Low-rise pants

While we are happy about high-rise pants, more and more celebrities are now appearing in low-rise pants. We hope that it won’t be as extremely low as it was at the beginning of the century.

13. Metallic eyelids

The incredibly bright makeup from the beginning of the 2000s is making a comeback. Matte makeup is not popular anymore — metallic is, but it’s not just about the lids, it’s also about the lips. They do look better than they did in the past, though.

Which of these fashion trends was a part of your life in the ’90s or the 2000s? Would you like to try some of them today?
