7 Ways to Take Care of Your Feet After They’ve Carried You Around All Day

There are about 29 muscles in the human foot. And after a hard day at work or long periods of standing, it may seem like each and every one of them is screaming.

We at Bright Side understand this feeling quite well and can help you deal with it. With the following tips, you should be able to treat yourself and relax — and your feet will thank you later.

1. Try a sensory walk.

sensory walk is an activity where you walk barefoot on various textures. There are parks in which round rocks, tree bark, leaves, and grass are combined, giving you a relaxing sensation while stepping on different materials.

You can also try to do this blindfolded by walking on grass or soft carpet to give yourself and your feet a relaxing, comfortable experience.

2. Exfoliate your feet.

For smooth and tired feet, try combining a nice foot massage with some exfoliation. During your bath, use an exfoliant, like a scrub or a pumice stone, and gently massage it into your feet. This is great for those of us who are trying to avoid calluses and cracks on our heels.

After that, rinse them off with warm water and moisturize your newly soft feet.

3. Massage them with a tennis ball.

If you’re in need of a relaxing massage but desire instant relief after a long day of work, here’s a solution for you. What you need is either a roll or a tennis ball. With the sole of your foot, gently slide it back and forth against the ball for a nice massage that can loosen your hamstrings.

This will help you prevent cramps, relieve tension, and provide you with tons of relaxation!

4. Exercise your feet.

To strengthen your feet, try stretching and exercising them. There’s a very simple exercise you can try.

  1. Place a small towel on the ground — a smooth surface is best.
  2. Place your foot on the end of the towel, leaving your soles on the towel’s fabric.
  3. Press your heel on the towel and curl your toes inward by pinching the fabric.

5. Apply ice.

If the heels of your feet hurt or look swollen, chances are, you may be experiencing some kind of inflammation. If this happens, try wrapping ice or a pack of frozen vegetables in a towel and apply it to your feet for 15 minutes. If the pain persists, consult a physician to explore other ways to treat your feet and health.

6. Try a banana paste.

If you feel like your feet are tired and in need of a pedicure, the remedy might be in your kitchen. For a banana paste, the recipe is pretty simple.

  1. In a bowl or plate, mash up a banana so that it becomes a paste.
  2. Soak your feet in warm water.
  3. Take one foot out of the water and massage it with the paste, covering your foot all the way to your calf. Do this in circular motions for 4 minutes.
  4. Rinse and repeat the same thing on the other foot.

7. Trim your nails.

Have you ever felt that your toes hurt after a long day of wearing shoes? Chances are, your toenails might be too long. If your nails keep pushing against your footwear, you may end up experiencing trauma, thickened nails, calluses, and even pain.

Don’t worry, the solution is simple. Trimming your nails to a moderate length, clearing them, and filing down sharp edges will help keep them and the rest of your feet healthy and pain-free.

Which of these tips did you like the most? What’s your typical nighttime foot care routine?
