10 Celebrity Couples Who Bring Rom-Com Movies to Real Life
We are often told that movie-like romance does not exist in reality. However, some celebrity couples are definitely living their own off-screen romantic comedies. Maybe not all of them felt the chemistry “at first sight” as they usually do in movies, but it doesn’t make their love any less powerful. After all, the initial attraction that we feel toward someone when we first meet is just a chemical reaction in our brain, and it shouldn’t affect the future relationship we have with our significant other.
We at Bright Side love fairy tales, but we appreciate real-life true love even more. These 10 love stories are so unbelievable, it’s hard to believe they weren’t crafted by a screenwriter.
1. Ned Rocknroll saved Kate Winslet from a house fire.
When a fire broke out on Necker island, everyone managed to escape it with their lives, and some, as it turns out, with love. Winslet was on a vacation with her children when the house they were staying in was struck by lightning. Luckily, her future husband had been staying in a nearby residence. With a head torch, he stepped in to save the actress from the fire, and eventually, she fell head over heels for her superhero. She grabbed only a bra and the passports for her children and, as she later joked, that was the moment she decided to marry her savior.
2. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met on a blind date.
When Harry was asked when he knew Markle was the one, he immediately answered, “The first time we met.” Set up by a mutual friend, they first met on a blind date in early July 2016. The chemistry between them was obvious, and on their second date, Prince Harry invited Markle to come on a trip to Africa with him. As he stated, camping under the stars in Botswana was crucial for getting to know each other. The royal couple continued dating and got married 2 years after that.
3. David Beckham fell in love with Posh Spice after seeing her on television.
David Beckham reportedly had a crush on his future wife after seeing her in a music video for the Spice Girls song, “Say You’ll Be There.” At the time, he was playing for Manchester United, and the first time he saw the singer was when she came to watch him in a game in London. It took him some time to actually approach her: they talked for the first time the following week in Manchester. Posh Spice gave him her phone number written on her train ticket, which Beckham still has after more than 20 years of marriage.
4. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds went on a double date — with other people.
Gossip Girl star, Blake Lively, and actor Ryan Reynolds met in 2010 on the set of their film, Green Lantern. However, sparks didn’t appear immediately, as they stayed friends. About a year later, fireworks between Reynolds and Lively erupted while they were out on a double date... but not with each other. Seeing the person of interest falling in love with someone else in front of their eyes probably made that the most awkward date for the other parties involved. Today, Lively and Reynolds say that the secret to a strong, long-lasting relationship is friendship and mutual respect.
5. Michael Douglas knew he’d be the father to Catherine Zeta-Jones’ children.
The couple met at the Deauville Film Festival. When he saw that Zeta-Jones was going to attend it, Douglas asked his assistant to arrange a meeting with her. Soon after they started talking, Douglas hit her with a bold line: “You know, I’m going to be the father of your children.” Zeta-Jones flew away the very next day, but they continued having long phone calls and dinners. Luckily, the age gap wasn’t an obstacle and they ended up in a marriage that has lasted for more than 20 years.
6. Patrick Dempsey went for a haircut and met his future wife.
Jillian Fink, a celebrity hair and makeup artist, was shocked when she saw Patrick Dempsey’s name in her appointment book in 1994. At the time, she was with another man, so they started officially dating after 3 years of occasional haircuts when Dempsey’s friend told him that Jillian had become single. The relationship developed quickly, and after just 3 months, Patrick and Jillian moved in together. The couple tied the knot in 1997, and they’ve been enjoying their marriage for more than 2 decades.
7. Chrissy Teigen starred as John Legend’s love interest in a music video.
Teigen and Legend met when the model starred in a music video for Legend’s song, “Stereo.” Even though they went back to the singer’s hotel room after filming, they weren’t head over heels for one another immediately. As Legend later stated, he fell in love with Teigen over the phone. It was during their phone calls and texting that he got to know her and her sense of humor. The romance continued to grow and they’re now married with children.
8. Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford were childhood pen pals.
This couple’s story seems as if it has been written by Nicolas Sparks. Mulligan and Mumford used to be pen pals when they were teens. After a few years of corresponding, they got out of touch, but something — either by coincidence or destiny — brought them back together. Even though they both dated other people in the meantime, the connection they shared earlier led them to marriage.
9. Kelly Preston was still married when she met John Travolta on a screen test for a movie.
When Preston and Travolta met during a screen test for their comedy, The Experts, Kelly was already married to another man. A friend of theirs predicted they would end up together and, apparently, he was right. Travolta later admitted that he knew she was the one the first moment he saw her. Soon after that, Preston realized that too, and she filed for divorce and married Travolta. It was obviously a good decision, as their marriage lasted 29 years, until her death.
10. Ashton Kutcher was Mila Kunis’ first kiss.
We all have movie star crushes, but few are lucky enough to marry theirs. Who would’ve thought that Kunis and Kutcher, everyone’s favorite on-screen couple from That ’70s Show, would also become real-life lovers? In an interview from 2001, Kunis later admitted that he was her first kiss and she was extremely nervous as she had a huge crush on him. However, they stayed friends after filming and it wasn’t until 2012 that they re-met at the Golden Globe Awards. They started casually dating, but things escalated quickly, so they moved in together the same year and tied the knot 3 years later.
